more or less same thing happened to my 16v gearbox hunted around for a box but they were all no better or in some cases worse than mine, and as the diff pins are a weak spot in the 16v box,I had mine fully rebuilt inc uprated diff bolts is now spot on if u plan to keep the car for a while prob the best plan of attack..

its usually easier to source an 8v box and use that along with an 8v clutch in your 16v

you'll hardly notice any difference in the gearing. the 8v 5th gear is longer which makes it easier (less revs) for motorway driving

i thought the 16v had a longer 5th gear? i thought about putting one in my 8v as my car is screaming when hoofing down the motorway, not much fun on long distances. i want to be able to cruise at speed, whereas at the moment i keep looking for a non-existant 6th gear!

are recon boxes really that much?? Oh my God!!! I better start saving.  Spoke to a guy the other day who said he would sort mine out.  He said that it wasn't worth bothering to replace the diff pin  bbut to just get a new box.

there is a 16v jetta being broken in the parts for sale section. id be inclined to take a chance on its 16v gearbox as jetta's aint the most desireable of cars and are usually driven by aul farts and therefore never raced nor rallied = good gearbox
