check the wires right at the back left side of the engine(as your looking at it front on)  that go to some electronic thing thats connected to the throttle body, i had a broken wire on mine and it also caused the engine to fluctuate at idle, now ive fixed that wire it goes like stink and would easily dust a 16v

This isn't right, even 8vs pull in fifth (not amazingly but not as bad as described!)

Follow the infamous digi tuning guide to get the timing and co2 right maybe? It's made a big difference to my car which now pulls decently pretty much all the way round 

But it'll never be a 16v. Which is why ABF is the way to go!!

Agree with Kittie. Set up right the 8v pulls fine in 5th.

As someone has already said, is it the original gearbox?

If it is..
Replace the Blue Temp Sender.
Check for vacuum leaks.
Have the timing Checked.

I had E plate 8v put driver gear box on 4 higher top speed but was in need of serious power upgrade, would't pull in 5th, my J plate 8v pulls mint.
