....And I'm also keeping my "chav-tastic" open grills for now until I'm further convinced.

with out stirring anything up lol, I am getting the S3 intercooler fitted on sat,

Are you doing it yourself.  Its a twit of a job, but if you are pulling off the front end, you might as well add the Forge too.   And make sure to use some anti-seize paste on the fixings.  The steel bolts and the alloy speed nuts on the lock carrier can corrode fairly quick!

as you know i have said open grills, by that post am i right in saying i am taking air away from where that I/C will be fitted.
I am doing a 1/4 mile day at crail and wondered if its worth reverting back to closed?

Do you have vag-com?  If so, hook it up, and monitor the inlet air temp.  I'd probably state they'd have more of an effect of taking air away from the front brake ducts, along with the underfloor DSG ducts.  Try with both grilles, swapping them between runs.
[/quote]

The I/C is be fitted by my tuner, luckily they have done an ed30 already so should be ok.
I have Vag-com so may take it to the 1/4mile and do 5 runs with and without to see, what channel is the inlet temps? for some reason i cant access my pdf file for vag-com.

That was a rather amusing read there TT, loved the ants farting comment. When he said I gained 1.27MPH I couldnt belive he was so proud of it. Sounds like a right bunch of muppets over there, hence Im not a memeber.

"Did you compare this with any "control"?  Did you close off the road, travel along a section of the road, recording your speed, whilst at the same time, measuring the exact mass of the car, the atmospheric pressure, the ambient air temperature, the air humidity, the wind speed, the wind direction - all with the OEM closed grilles fitted???????

And then did you repeat all of the above with your chav-tastic open fog lamp grilles, with the identical measurements from the previous run - same fuel level, same air temp, same humidity, same windspeed, same wind direction?

No - I think not.   In that case, your 1.27mph (was that measured to a recurring 10th significant figure?) means absolutely Jack Schit.  An ant farting at the side of the autobahn could have a greater effect! "

....The problem is though that, no matter whether correct or incorrect regarding the topic, such language is guaranteed to cause a relatively aggressive reaction, T_T. Sorry, but you did ask for honest opinions.

Yes, I did ask for honest opinions, and I am genuinely thankfull of those.

I agree, but unfortunately, the quoted text on here doesn't show the whole story.

I initiated a response (over there) to somebody earlier in the thread who had recommended the open fogs.

My initial comment was a very neutral and friendly comment - sommat like "the open fogs are not a good idea".  Someone else then jumps into the "discussion" with an extremely arrogant reply - and the way I read it was that 1.27 mph top speed was soley gained from using the open fogs.  Two issues arise from that specific comment, and I reasonably, if a little harshly (but no more harshly than the previous poster had replied) challenged him.

The second issue, which I quite frankly couldn't be arsed to raise over there - was the sheer accuracy of the claimed speed advantage (not from all the controls which I had stated, but soley down to the accuracy of the speed measuring equipment).  The mighty engineering resources of Ford, General Motors, Volkswagen Group, Toyota, etc, etc can NOT get a speedo accuracy down to zero decimal places, and actually allow for tollerances of up to 10%.  Yet he was claiming accuracy of two decimal places.  Indeed, apart from the very top levels of motorsport, most other classes of motorsport can only achieve two decimal places - and that relies on very expensive, and regularly calibrated specialist timing equipment.  Furthermore, no GPS device can record speeds down to two decimal places.  The US operators only guarantee GPS speed accuracy down to 0.5mph, which is a considerable difference in accuracy to what the poster on the other side was claiming!   And as a final comment on this point, lasers, which travel at the speed of light, are probably known to be the most accurate method of measuring speed, yet police laser speed detectors only have an accuracy of 0.1 mph - ie, one decimal place, and not two!

Unfortunately, you do have a tendency to slip into such language and I've had to put up with it in the past in spite of enjoying your turn of phrase. However, I know you better now and don't take offence so easily. Having said this, I'm guilty of all sorts of posting indiscretions too!

I fully agree with all those sentiments.

By all means strongly disagree with someone but do you really have to tell them their sincere opinion "means absolutely Jack Schit"? I don't think you can expect others to respect your posts if you express yourself in that way, irrespective of whether your facts are right or wrong, or how strongly you feel.

But I was only responding in a manner and tone which the previous poster had used.  Furthermore, I had given a very detailed, and extremely reasonable "counter" to what was quite simply a stupid comment.  Then, rather than them trying to answer my comments, they simply returned with agressive bully-boy tactics and personal insults.

I'm just being very honest here in writing what I think in response to your original question.

:afro:  :afro:

Thank-you.  And I've also read your "morning after" post too.    So absolutely no hard feelings to you Robin, or anyone else.  I'd much prefer that we are all mature, and open and honest with each other.  Even if we disagree on certain points, we all seem to be able to move on, in a mature, civilised, and most importantly, friendly manner.

Group hug to us all.

I think that for a lot of people that dont "know" TT they will take offense to what he has posted and I feel they should. Why shouldnt they? Thats not for us to decide.

When our Pajero started smelling like burnt tyres from under the bonnet TT helped me out with a few solutions - FYI I still have not figured it out. The car didnt stink after we took it to the beach.... So couldnt source the smell.

The point is that in todays society there are so many ways you can be proved wrong. The thread TT posted in is the perfect example. TT is a retired technician and relating back to the Pajero when I reed TT's suggestions to my dad the first thing he said was- That man certainly knows what he is talking about. This comes from my father who is huge in the oil industry and is a fully qualified airoplane technician and can work on most planes. Not to mention fly them

People must respect others opinions. As I have found out recently. Having a degree and a diploma are two different things and I would respect what TT writes over what anybody does as he has the qualification. If you truly think what he says is wrong. Then prove him wrong. Its simple.

I think the important thing to remember when reading any post is to look at it subjectively. Read it and if you take offense read it again. The second time you read it your viewpoint usually changes.

Mike

Thank you.  Very frank, honest, reasoned and mature comments.  Much appreciated.  You'll go far!

Lots of useful info over there, been a member for many years and got me out of the crap in the early days of my mk4 ownership.

They may be very knowledgeable over the Mk4 - afterall, it would be a bit embarrasing, considering their "title".   However, strictly regarding the Mk5, I find their info of very little use, to the point of actually being wrong!

It can and does happen on every forum though - where a debate/discussion is viewed by some as a direct attack, criticism or argument as if you'd just called their mum a lady of questionable principles.

Did I?  Don't recall doing so!  :undecided:  Or is that a tounge in cheek comment?

Whilst I sort of agree though, there is no excuse for turning a perfectly reasoned "critisism", or arugment into a personal attack.  Like I've already said - take the piss out of me all day long - I don't care, I can give as good as I get.    But please, there is no need to resort to anything personal - it won't look good to "guests" who may be reading, and is basically an indication of poor moderation or site admin.

People misunderstand my manner and humour all the time, but fortunately on here I have a big red end badge and they either have to get used to it or sod off

It's only red because you've been poking it where you shouldn't!
