The saga continues with the mk 4 GTI

well not sure if anyone remembers the other week me mentioning my dads mk 4 GTI having major problems..

basically he has owned the car from brand new, 2.0 GTi 2000 X plate, fully loaded with every extra, only thing is its just the 2.0 lump but he aint fussed about the speed, he just wanted a good spec golf to see him out.

anyhow, it has 75k on the clock, FSH very well maintained, whilst in for its service 3 week ago, they found oil all over spark plug 2...not good, oil is in the head which is a very bad sign

the car is also getting hot...to the point the needle goes off the gauge, well they have done all the usual checks, head gasket is fine etc, compression test + fine, changed all the sensors for the fan and temp etc, (one of which came up on vag com) this has made no difference.

changed the air flow meter to see if that improves things, will know tomo...

anyhow that seems to be a seperate problem to the oil one in the head tho....

we have found out that VW made a huge bals up on certain 2000 year engines by putting the piston 2 in upside down and the piston ring the wrong way up to so oil leaks into the head (it was stamped on the wrong side, thus meaning it was installed the wrong way up) Also meaning they burn alot more oil and that the engine wears out alot quicker, VW never recalled as it would have run in to thousands of pounds as every car would require a full engine re build..

dads car is now getting a full rebuild using all genuine parts (i get them for cost price) so we will see if this is the reason his car has oil in its head...id does appear it could be the case

"if only everything in life was as reliable as a VW"  Hmmmmmmmm..... if it wsnt for the fact my MK3 has been a great car, and the 2 mk 4's at work which have been OK to a extent,  id be very pissed off with VW's

After owning mk2's, 3's and 4's i do think the mk 4's are not as well built as the earlier VW's....

20v is pretty much bullet proof - seen a MK3 with an S3 engine in it pushing nearly 300bhp
