Golf failed its mot

Heavily pitted nearside front disc with worn pads was why it failed.

Offside front disc was advisory as were the pads…

Do I get em to replace both discs and pads for £150 inclusive of labour/VAT, free re-test and have it done this afternoon or do I take it off them, order the parts, do it myself and then get it MOT’d again which’ll take about 3 days?

it's also a possibility they can charge a partial retest if within 10 days, again at there discretion, i would be wary of a garage that wont give 10 days either free or partial retest. did you check that they were corroded? prime pickings for garage to fail on easily replaced item

I'd ask if you can have a free retest within x amount of days, first of all & take it from there.

I don't know much Bob payed on ebay, but i'd be expecting to pay about £70 for a set of front pads & discs.

He paid £70 for Mintex discs and mintex pads - though they were 312mm.

Pretty good going.

Yeah I checked, they offer a discounted retest within 10 days of the inital MOT subject to some conditions but the main problem was that I need the car for work, which is over 15 miles away with nobody in the near vicinity to share with. An online order would have taken 2 days minimum, plus the reduced price of a re-test, doesn't really save me that much in the long run, I'd loose any saving taking unpaid leave at work if I was without a car ahyhow.

Just wish I'd done a disk upgrate last month when I was considering it...

I say do it yourself.  The front discs and pads I bought were Mintex, 312mm vented.  You will only want 288mm vented with pads for the front, which is gonna cost you a fair bit less.  And remember, fitting mintex i basically upgrading your stock VW discs and pads.

I believe by law they can''t charge for a re-test, that's the reason the law was brought in in the first place.

After failure, fees for re-examination vary according to the following circumstances:

If your vehicle is left with the Testing Station for repair and re-examination – NO FEE

If the vehicle is taken away from the Testing Station and returns for re-examination on other than one or more of the items listed below, then only the failed item (including any other items affected by the execution of the repair) needs to be examined by the MOT Tester, for which the Testing Station may charge (up to), half the full Test fee. Whilst this fee cannot be exceeded, the Tester may, at his or her discretion conduct a full re-inspection if at the Tester’s discretion it is deemed necessary.

NOTE: It should also be noted that should a vehicle be submitted for an MOT Test whilst still having an unexpired and valid MOT pass certificate, and fail the inspection, the original pass certificate remains legally valid until it expires. However, should any vehicle have developed faults which renders it un-roadworthy in legal terms, it would be unlawful to use it on the road irrespective of whether or not it has a current and valid MOT pass certificate.
