Im affraid I disagree with deleting threads... if your not interested in the topic or feel it is straying off the point then simply dont read it! How much more simple could it be. This is a forum where users should feel free to post whatever they like.

I think the banter is what keeps the regulars coming back. All the information that anyone could ever require about the V is there if you want it. With newbies excluded many just can't be ar$ed to search for it! So why tailor a forum for people who come on and take just the info they need with out ever being helpful to others? MAKE THEM READ OUR CR4P!!

imo

going slightly off topic is fine as long as the original question is answered but in some cases it goes so far off topic it becomes annoying

i'm all for a bit of banter too but if the information gets lost in the threads you put people off sticking around

....It's when the thread goes off topic for more than about 4 posts that it becomes irritating. Just as in face-to-face conversation, subjects will meander.

It's very much down to the Moderators to apply a happy balance and they should always remain calm and impartial and never take sides in an argument.

Anyway, who could possibly be annoyed by those such as her : -

....The "mkv gti-24bhp" thread is a perfect example of the lack of moderation which sometimes happens on this site.

There's a happy balance but if it gets too much I unsubscribe the thread and don't bother to read - In doing so, further possibly useful contribution is lost.

I have to disagree with you there Red, Hurdy deletes " inappropriate reply s" but doesn't make a song and dance about it iv'e spotted a couple lately, this imho works well instead of locking threads.
there is a huge variety of people on here ranging from people who want to know how a fuel pump work's to people wanting to turn there front end into Kit off Knight rider.Even if i started a thread surely it is not up to me how people answer it.
I am pretty sure over controlling thread's will turn people off more than thread's going off topic.

I could not agree more with all of the above, if the person who starts the  thread does not get what they are looking for all they have to do is bump it back up and say does anyone have a serious answer please.

In my humble opinion, yes a few people on here might not like the current direction, but just look how popular this place is lately and that tell's it's own story.
You can count on one hand the number of thread's were the OP did not get a helpful answer.
Just my 2 penneth worth.

My two pence worth:

Obv if someone asked a serious question asking for technical help or advice, since iv been a member at least, the question/topic is usually answered very well tbh. There are instances where threads diverge from the original topic and the "mkv gti-24bhp" thread is an example (contributed by myself I'll admit) where the chat goes off topic.

IMO unless someone is being completely out of order/rude/offensive i can't see a reason to restrict non related chat since it builds rapport between members! If all us Mk5 owners were in a room together we could have conversations with whoever we want and it wouldn't be a problem. I know i rarely leave the mk5 section because the people i know here aren't necessarily likely to see something I post in the nonsense section. Therefore sometimes using an unrelated thread to share humour and thoughts on other matters, although unrelated to the topic of the thread, i feel is important in fostering a forum where people can be open to debate anything and share our ideas.

I know someone could start their non-related conversation in the nonsense section and would be right to technically do so. However with all respect, its the MK5 owners opinions/banter/thoughts I like to read/see/converse with since thats where i spend most of my time and you are the people i know on here. Topic digression is a way of achieving this...obv within reason!

Don't know if that makes sense to others but hey...

....Like I said before - There's a happy balance - No-one wants over control but sometimes some control is a good thing.

Anyway, every Moderator knows that you can't please all of the people all of the time.
