Hi,
Got a 97 8v GTI. Basically I've had the car since Jan and have got the most annoying problem imaginable!!
When I bought the car I could hear a whirring noise from the rear of the car whilst on test drive - the guy i was buying it off said that the Wheel bearings could do with being replaced and that he had bought a pair of them but hadn't got round to fitting them - he then said that he had taken it to a loal garage and that they couldn't find any fault with either rear bearings, the mechanic said it was possibly tyre noise.
However I bought the car and travelled home, booked it in at my local VW specialist and asked for both bearings to be replaced - the mechanic replaced them both and one of my abs sensors at the same time., however, the car still retained the noise, the mechanic then said it could be tyre noise (2 mechanics saying this now) Anyway I thought I'd really pay attention to the noise(s) and try to work out when and what exactly it did.
I've worked out that no way can it be tyre noise as sometimes when i'm coming to a stop and turning it almost feels like its rubbing and I can feel slight vibrations in my seat. I have also realised that my brakes are always making a slight whirr noise when I brake. The noise is also relative to speed,i.e the faster the speed the faster the noise, the slower the speed the slower and more distinct the noise.
I've heard that drive shafts can cause noises and vibrations like this - is this likely? The noise is really pissing me off now and is starting to spoil the car that I love. Any ideas? Could it just be a simple binding brake? I would have thought the mechanic would have noticed that whilst the wheels were off when doing the bearings?
Sorry for the long pot.
cheers
