Only difference between a 8v and 16v is that the 16v arrives at the next corner a bit quicker than the 8v

Get a mk2!
You may find yourself driving it more than the wife

....Apart from the Porsche 911 derivatives, is there a more special series of cars over the last 30 years than the Golf GTI?

I love those Mk2's.

I would love to say get a Lupo GTI as they are amazing cars (Stay away from the Polo GTi) but I dont know what the prices are like for them oversees.

An MK2 16V sounds amazing but in truth there is only one option for your wife......

Get her a Smart Car.  :lipsrsealed:

Hey Phil nice to see you back and looking to splash the cash on a new toy! Definately go for a MK2, I had a 16v until a few months ago and wish I hadnt sold it but needs must. Mine was an Oak Green and many regard these as "rare" in truth they are not just one of the best colours.
Good luck in your search, for that sort of money you should be able to find a tidy one.
