its not even that the esp reduces power enough to stop the slip... it pretty much cuts it off all together, and i think that is pretty dangerous in itself.

When the MKV GTI first came out all the reviews said that the ESP was excellent and unobtrusive. They must have been on about the ESP stopping a slide rather than the TC kicking in.

....Apart from the issue I reported due to a mix of Goodyear Assymetrics and Directionals, I haven't had any issues with ESP during the 3 years I've owned the GTI. Perhaps some of you guys have a different driving style.

We seem to be going around in circles here - Some of us don't have an ESP problem and others do and prefer it off.

I dont think its circles just a varied set of parameters mean the ESP envelope covers a wide range of us mkv owners driving scenarios

driver style
car torque delivery / remap
susp mods
tyre types +/- pressures

e.g. remapped ED30 on remoulds (that have too high a pressure and incorrect camber) in the wet = some ESP issues
well sorted suspension+LSD+slicks+dry road = no ESP at all

....I think you are right

My suspension mods have definitely helped, my remapped torque curve is very smooth and well positioned on the plot to deliver driveability, I maintain recommended tyre pressures, I use the throttle progressively.

I think that, although we all get caught out occasionally by the road surface, if you are spinning your wheels it's a sign that you aren't driving properly.

....Apart from the quattro feature, which car do you prefer between your Ed30 and the S3?

How long are the clutches lasting on the S3's?

I managed to mince my clutch in 11k miles from new on my remapped TDI quattro :lipsrsealed: :embarassed:

I'm pretty sure I prefer the S3, although the golf is pretty well screwed together, the build quality of the Audi is far better it feels more solid, the brakes are leagues ahead also. The ED30 was a really quick car, the S3 not as quick, yet , and with the 4WD I'll be able to get the power down.

The 1 thing I do miss from the ED30 is its really keen turn in and sort fun nature if you know what I mean, the S3 does feel more grown up, which isn't always best

It will be interesting to see how the S3 responds to a bit of modding
