Can I bring the topic back to coilies?

Does anyone else have any opinions of other makes of coilovers for the MK5?

I have seen some very positive reviews from other VAG based car forums on these - http://www.v-maxx.co.uk/viewproduct.asp?id=98&m2=114

I know the normal rules of you get what you pay for etc, but they are TUV approved and come with a 2 year warranty.  :undecided:

I have been doing some research Steve P from what iv'e read it seems to be how long a coilover last's rather than ride quality. unless your putting it round a track of course, If you click on the link on my coilly thread which everyone has ignored  there is a salt test on there showing corrosion on various types, if you do high mileage and change your car regulary imo they may do the job.

....I read it - KW's are the most resistant to salt spray in the tests.

Cheers TC, sorry didn't see your thread originally.

I do quite high milage and have previously changed my car very often but with the ED30 I believe I will be keeping it for at least a few years (unless the MK6 GTI-R does become a reality ).

What's made you consider the KW's over other brands if you don't mind me asking?

And is a salt spray test that important to sway the decision making process?

I think you have got to decide what you really want, if your looking for just a better stance and slighty better handling then spring and shock's would suffice IMO.
IF you do occasional track days or like me like to go away for a couple of days driving place's like the welsh hills then it's advantage's to be able to adjust it my self to suit and also fun experimenting trying to find what suit's my driving style. Dont get me wrong im not trying to kid anyone either i would like to go lower in general the asthetic's are important to me aswel.
In answer to your question's.

Not really important but if there on the car for along time they might become difficult to adjust at home without regular maintenance something which your average joe probably wont undertake.

My reasoning for possibly choosing these is they have seperate damping again giving more choice on setting's. Also have a great reputation for quality and mr TT got me thinking the other day about  the effect's of even small modification's on VW design so i want the best i can afford and that could possibly be KW coillie's all in my humble opinion of course.

Cheers TC, your comments all make logical sense.

My desire is to find a solution that improves the stance of the car (but not to slam it to the ground) plus give some improvement in handling without affecting the ride quality to much.

For my daily drive probably just a eibach spring kit and some arb's would suffice but I want to be do more with the car and will be doing the odd track day and traveling a bit through europe on a couple of driving holidays in the future.

Anyway on with the research.  :nerd:

....I agree with your choice, Top Cat - Having adjustable settings allows an expert such as APS, Ray West, or VWR to set it up as best for your driving and use and you can then leave it alone. I'd go for V3's for that reason - More for an expert to play with.

Although we all like the low look, it's silly if you don't consider the handling of the whole car. I followed a slammed down GTI on the first part of the journey home from Inters on typical B-roads, nothing extreme, and he could only go slow and built up a huge and impatient queue behind - Pointless except for posing. Stupid to rip up your tyres on the wheel arches too.

its all about bilstein if you can afford them.... they are the milltek of the suspension world, i think its  bout £1300 plus fitting for a set of p10's which give you all the adjustability you will ever require for all situations and easy to adjust too.

looking on this forum I have not see anyone yet who has them but very popular with usa and germans.

I drove a mk3 gti with full bilstein when I had my milltek fitted to my ed30, was a courtesy car, and was so much fun around the bends.

i don't think the handling on the stock gti is too bad, where as the breaks are so i cant make up my mind on what to go for breaks or bilstein!

decisions decisions :smug:

....Absolutely right about Bilstein being considered the best - Much more expensive though. Ray West's advice to me when we did my suspension was that Bilstein was overkill just for road use. I drove his road & track Mk5 GTI with them - Excellent.

Ive had the eibach Pro-Street-s and now have the KW Variant 3's.

I like the Eibach coilovers, although have been told they felt over sprung and under damped. They were a nice comfortable ride.
I upgraded to the KW V3's for the ultimate track performance. These are significantly harder ride, but as yet havent had a chance to test the performance on the track.
