« on: 03 May 2004, 21:05 »
my car has just started to make a lot of grinding noise in the gearbox when i take my foot off the gas the noise gets worse and its started knocking at times. i have just parked the car up in case i cause more damage any ideas ? is it time for a new gear box or does the problem lie elsewhere :'(

any response will be great

Check the gearbox oil level.
To do this remove the filler plug, fluid should trickle out if the level is correct.

if your in gear and you take your foot off the gas....... and slow down using the engine/ gearbox and you can hear grinding then this sounds like output shaft bearings......this is what holds the diff in place!

where the driveshafts connect to the gearbox shake theses if you have alot of play there worn...... you should also start getting oil out of the shaft seals
once the bearings have totaly colapsed when you back off in gear there will be a massive loud roar!
it will sound like the exhaust is hanging off!!!!!!
this will be because the diff now has lots of movement and will be bashing the gearbox casing inside the box......this happend on mine!

the whining noise will get louder!

thanks for the reply`s . I checked the oil it looked empty so topped it up and it all came out off the bottom. And yes it does sound noisey when you take foot off the gas and slow down so maybe the bearings or is the gearbox gone all together.
How much does the bearings cost to replace or the whole recon gearbox

thanks ???

What do you mean all come out the bottom?
Where abouts?
If the bearings have gone then it will probably be cheaper and easier to source a recon box.
