I thought that was only 97 ron now??

Nope, all Tescos Super Unleaded is (should) now 99RON, supplied by Greenergy.  Tesco 99 is also the official fuel of the British Rally Championship.  And finally, in independent tests, it has a clear advantage over BP Ultimate (97RON), and a marginal (but worthwhile) advantage over Shell V-Power (also 99RON).

I've always just put in Sainsburys Super which is BP Ultimate at a lot cheaper price!!

Sainsburys Super is definately NOT the same as BP Ultimate.  OK, it may be the same 97RON, but the BP juice has a better additives package than the Sainsburys juice.

Also tried Shell whilst I was up at Wolverhampton (since my fiance lives around there) and that didnt make any difference whatsoever!!  I'll stick with Sainsbury's until I know otherwise ;)

But you need to allow the ECU to "adapt" to the higher grade brew, especially if it has always had the 95RON pauper brew.  :nerd:  Futhermore, if you are getting 38mpg, then your driving style will not "instruct" the ECU to adapt!   :smug:

With the higher ocatane (minimum 98RON, which rules out all but Tesco 99 and Shell V-Power), once the ECU has adapted, then not only will you get more power, but because the engine will be working at it's optimally desinged settings, you will also get better fuel economy too.

fair enough TT , I bow to your superior knowledge on all but the lumpy idle.

Mine is def NOT smooth , and hunts as if it has an ignition problem (felt through seat/pedals etc).
Even to the point passengers have commented.
It comes and goes in severity, and seems to change with fuel type, but I dont believe I have a 'problem'

What I would say is that the level of engine movement on various GTI's Ive seen on rolling roads under load is vastly different, some move lots , others hardly at all. So maybe that exacerbates the effect?
Anyway Im not wishing to hijack.

Phil let us know how it goes.

You confused me - I thought you were the OP, but you aint!  :embarassed:

OK, I'm no Ed30 expert, only having a mere GTI  - but if it's "hunting", then that is often a sign of an air leak in the induction system somewhere.  Saying that, it could also be a dodgy MAF.  Does it give good power under load, smoothly up to the red line?  If so, then it prolly aint the MAF.

Have you hooked it up to VAG-COM?  Check for stored fault codes, and if any are found, clear them, take it for a good run, and recheck for fault codes, and report back.  Also, if you do have VAG-COM, a data log of turbo boost would be good, along with inlet air temps.

What I would say is that the level of engine movement on various GTI's Ive seen on rolling roads under load is vastly different, some move lots , others hardly at all. So maybe that exacerbates the effect?

Ohhhh, I'm having the rear mount replaced under warranty - but it was like getting blood out of a stone - "they all do that, sir".  Bollox (or words to that effect ) was my reply.  After their refusal to find another GTI with pendulum-like engine mounts, theyve ordered in the part.  Just gotta book it in when the Touareg is available as a courtessy car.

If I knew what the OP was , I might be

On Awesomes RR twice now giving good power , pulls clean and hard (esp on 99RON) , no fault codes
There aint nothing wrong me thinks

Ohhhh, I'm having the rear mount replaced under warranty
Might be worth me getting mine changed too then me thinks....

Well guys, I'm really sorry I've not replied to my own thread!! :(  I never thought so many people would reply!!  Would have helped also if the damn email notifications had worked properly!!

Right an update in the situation...

It went in for its MOT and they found that the waste gate was leaking boost, so they replaced the pipe (I think it was the pipe) and it went through the MOT just fine with the emissions testing...
It also seems a lot more responsive in the revs and in any gears now with this done.  But, its still running lumpy and seems to be during the driving or at idle..

I have used Shell V Power but with the same results as before.  It was still lumpy at idle and lumpy which moving, which wasnt ideal.

It seems to feel to me that its holding back slightly when going along, kinda like missing but not as badly?  I find it when your crusing with the cruise control on, or whether your going through in traffic it feels to be holding back.

Whilst I had my Subaru, when it was mapped it was mapped on Sainsburys Super and I never had any issues with it at all..  I find that the car feels quicker with the waste gate repaired, but it still has a fair way to go to get the same performance as my Rover 220 Turbo Coupe... ;)  The last time I was hearing Tesco's was just 97 Ron super, but maybe I was misinformed..

Everything is under warrenty so if something doesnt work, it'll be repaired for free :D I've got full component warrenty so I'm gonna try and make the most of it! :)  My last GT TDI certainly did

I've had the car hooked up to the 'PC' that reports the codes which reported the misfire on cyclinder 1 and the lack of power for the turbo but I'm unsure if they had cleared the findings or not since.  They seem to think I'm a pain in the ass I think, but having paid a lot of money for this car and I want it running right.

If I've missed anything, please let me know :)  I had a few posts to read and comment on

The lowest mpg so far is just over 35mpg, but the best is nearing 39mpg :)  I've had the trip computer giving me an average of over 45mpg ;)  Not bad for a 40 mile trip either   Seems to manage 400 miles at least from a tank..  Ever since I've had the car, its been run on Super unleaded at a minimum, Sainsburys mostly as I dont live near Shell so its the best place.... :(

Oh did a bit of research on the fuel searching...

http://www.petrolprices.com/sainsburys.html

http://www.petrolprices.com/tesco.html

Also it seems that the Tesco 99 Ron super fuel is only available at certain places so oh well :(
