It's not the engine, it's the ECU............. A sudden surge of power may damage it or at least throw up fault codes. I would never 'jump' start a modern car. 

If in doubt, take the battery off and charge it.

....That's it!! Thanks! It all comes back to me - VW Assist were going to get my car to my VW dealer for battery test if it hadn't had enough juice to start. My dealer later checked my battery anyway.
