Newbie alert !
« on: 30 July 2008, 17:16 »
Afternoon / Evening all !

Firstly, I apologise if there is a thread somewhere which covers this, I have yet to spot it.

I will (hopefully very soon - depends how quick my Skyline sells !) be in the market to buy a MKV GTI, and I may ask my local dealer to source me one (looking for an 06, preferably in the gun-metal colour (steel grey ?) within Xenons and the 18" Monza's), but I wondered if there is some kind of buyers guide out there ?  Things to look out for when you are buying a 2nd-hand GTI ?

Hopefully the car would be new enough that there is nothing to worry about, but I wanted to check if there are any problem areas to look for when purchasing a GTI.

I drove one a couple of weeks ago and I was impressed with it's all-round capabilities.

Other than that, just a "hello" from a newbie !

Cheers,
Darren

Welcome to the forum.

There are a few of these doing the rounds. Here is the link to the most recent and most comprehensive list of things to check for when buying second hand and on delivery:

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=64432.0

Many of the problems with the GTi were solved after 06 so your should not cause any issues.

Steel Grey is a great colour as it hides swirls, and dirt very well. Xenons is a must in my opinion and the Monza's are good.

With regards to monza's you may want to check for "White Worm" on them which will mean a replacement of all four rims for free warranty or not.

Certain engine builds had an issue with a fuel something or other. I cant remember but that you can check on delivery and will be fixed under warranty.

Before buying a second hand motor I would suggest getting VW to bring up the cars history. That way you can find out what has been done to the car, is it an import? Has the car had any major issues etc before buying the car. An example of this is Phil who almost bought an Edition 30 but after checking with VW found that the car was a lemon.

Other than that, push hard for a discount and only accept the car if you are absolutely happy with it.

Im sure I forgot a few things but others can fill in for me.

Happy Driving

Hi folks !

Now I've finally made my mind up on getting a GTI I'm quite keen for the Skyline to sell (never thought I'd say that).

It's only been up for grabs for a week though - so need to be patient (which gives me time to learn about GTI's a bit more).

Some great info on this site by the way....and some lovely looking cars posted up in the picture thread.
