Oil consumption
« on: 25 May 2008, 20:18 »
Just got home tonight when the check oil level warning light came on my 07 GTI. Not very impressed as it was only serviced in february and has since done under 4K miles. I wasn't aware that they used so much. Has the dealer not put enough in and should I complain?

How often do you check the oil?

It might be worth saying to the dealer as obviously oil consumption shouldn't be that high given it had only done 4k from having fresh oil. Could be a leak or problem?

Hi,

My car has lost 2 litres of oil over 2500 miles. Only found that out when the oil level warning light came on way out in the middle of nowhere. Dealer says it's normal to use 1 litre per 1000 miles. Makes a mockery of the 10k service intervals. Is anyone else finding this?

That is perfectly acceptable, and doesn't make a "mokery" of anything!

If you read your owners handbook, you will actually see that the specified oil consumption limit is up to one litre of oil per 1,000 kilometres, which is about 600 miles!

Dispite what you may have been lead to believe, cars are NOT "maintenance free" - and they still require the driver to carry out specific tasks between the manufactures recommended service intervals.

HTH, and welcome to the forum.

A couple of weeks ago the low oil warning came up and I was quite alarmed as I had checked the oil just the week previously and it was roughly midway between max and min.  When I pulled over and checked the oil level, it hadn't really dropped at all but I put a touch more in just to be safe.  So it might be the case that the level alarm is set quite high.  Alternatively it might be the case that my oil level sensor is on the fritz....

Yup.  They are known to be unreliable, and should NOT be trusted.  Use a good old Mk1 dipstick.

The first owner of your car has thrashed it allowing it to bed in, even with nice VAG spec oil.
The oil drinkers have tootled and never allowed the car to bed in.

There is more chance of your car having the nasty problems, lol, lol
