its broken
« on: 12 May 2008, 19:18 »
i have a mk2 89 reg golf gti 8v, and have been having problems with it, when im driving it sometimes starts missfiring so bad tht if i put my foot on the pedal full down it will jus miss an backfire, and a very loud whining noise comes from the back, if i tutn it off and leave it for a abit it clears up then it all happens again.
i suspect its the main fuel pump or lift pum but has anyone had any similar problems or better ideas?
i have changed the dizzy cap an rotor arm and plugs, i dout its electrical as the whining noise only starts when it breaks down thn goes when its all cleared up.

any help much appreciated as iv only had the car 1 month now and only used to classic minis lol
cheers lee

It could well be a fuel pump issue by the sounds of it, but more importantly MK2's are taking over the classic mini world

But for the purest engine experience, displacement has no replacement. All other methods are simply attempts to artificially recreate the benefits of displacement.

Disconnect the main pump either by removing the fuse or pulling the plug out of it and turn the ignition on - should be able to hear the lift pump prime up. If not, replace it - easy job and much cheaper than the main pump.
