New Cab Owner
« on: 24 April 2004, 21:32 »
Hi all
Bought a white Mk1 cabriolet at the end of last year and was holding off for its 1st MOT before doing anything to it. Its through the MOT now with a bit of welding and a few bits and pieces and now I have loads I want to do:
*new hood
*new seats
*paintwork
*electric windows
*central locking
etc, etc
Just wondered about everybody elses experiences in restoring cabs. If anyone knew of good sites or specialists etc. I'm far from a mechanical genius so I plan to take it slow. What would everyone suggest as being the first place to start?

hello, well done on the great buy - how old is the cab?  8)

aslong as the mechanics are straight i reckon the world is your oyster - the golf magazine and pvw are good reads for getting ideas and 'how to's' - dizzie the moderator in audio and cosmetics has done a stunning job of his electrics and could probably give some good advice.  ;)

e bay always has lots of bargains and its also worth checking the parts for sale section here.  ;D

i have a white hood in xcellent condition ( non electric) if your interested  8)

have fun

Hi Kenny
welcome to the site, nice choice in cars too.
I fitted electric windows and central locking into my cab last year. The electrics are fairly straight forward to do, but actually getting the mechanism in is easier with two people.
There are a few of us on here with cabs, so there is plenty of experience for any problems you may encounter.
Let us know hwo you get along with the bits and pieces, and post some pictures in the gallery.
Here's a link to my cab's write up

Perfect time of year to be bringing out that cab mate.......I'm off to swansea this wednesday to have a new Mohair hood fitted as mine was slashed by jealous vandals >:(
There is so much you can do with theses cars, but I'd concentrate on getting it running sweet, if your interested in getting your hood done I'll email you when mine is replaced - give you an idea on cost etc....

You taking it to GTI fest ?

Thanks for the welcome. I will take some photos of the car and post them over the coming week - it doesnt look great just now but you can see it has potential. So far I've done a few easy bits and pieces - some BBS wheels I picked up second hand and a right good clean for starters. Unfortunately to get the welding done the bodykit had to be airsawed in places so it has been patched temporarily (albeit fairly well done). I plan to get the seats out this week and see what a good scrub will do for them. I have covered them with some seat covers coz its rained so much I didnt want to take them out. Last time I removed them one of the plastic runner clip things broke and now the seat rattles a bit - anyone know where I can get these from? Also getting a new boot carpet through e-bay this coming week as well. I have so many questions now I have found like-minded folks it'll take days to ask them all.

At this rate we're going to have to have our very own section :P

Those plastic runners you mention are available from VAG fairly cheaply

Now there's a good idea. We do seem to be getting an awful lot of rag-tops joining up, and with summer right round the corner, it would be great to get them all together at a show to take some pics for the gallery - if only to make all the tin-tops jealous ;)
