Im wondering if there is a diffrence between the pre and post 95 models.

I have a car stereo which works fine in my 97 golf but it doesnt do anything at all in my 93 golf.  Wont turn on,  i put it back in the other one and it worked absolutly fine! Im pluging it into the origonal connections here so cant be a problem there,  there is deffinatly power to the connectors as it will run the origonal VW stereo ok.   Is there something im missing,  I mean both connectors look the same and they all have power ?!?

Cheers.

This link may be helpful  http://installdr.com/Harnesses/VW-Wiring.pdf

and possibly this one  http://www.the12volt.com/installbay/vehiclewiring/1/yeard/Volkswagen.html

hope it helps

Sometimes the pin layout is changed by people when fitting different stereos. You can remove the pins from the plug by pulling on the black legs inside the plug and then pulling on the corresponding wire.

thats cool cheers mate

turns out there is no MEM Feed, only a main power feed,  is this normal?  Also my stereo does no turn off its self, i have to do it my self!! which is not good because i can see my self being stranded!   Its a bit backwards isnt it?  My 20 year escort could even turn the stereo off with the ignition

There should be a constant +12v (memory) feed otherwise you will lose all of your station and EQ settings every time you turn the ignition off.

If it's not there already at the plug you could find another constant +12v from elsewhere in the car and feed it to the radio for the memory. I would recommend you fit an inline fuse on the supply you take it from though.

The radio should switch itself off when you remove the ignition key, if it doesn't then you alredy have a constant +12v supply but it's connected to the switched imput for the stereo.

Well first off because mine has the earlia ignition key its not got the press in barrel that keeps the stereo on while the keys in,   I have no memory feed what so ever its dead at all times.  but my battery feed is live at all times...  the stereo never turns off.   I guess something is wrong?

Cheers.

You need to check your stereo wiring diagram to see which pins the +12v & Ground should be going to. They are obviously there because your other radio is working so at least one or more must be in the wrong position in the plug for your new stereo.

What make/model is your the stereo you are trying to fit?

Its not the stereo it works fine in my other golf.

The problem is the thicker live wire is always live and the thiner memory wire never has any power to it, there is obviously a fault there.

The thick wire that is always live is the memory wire. The other wire should should switch with the ignition.

What colour is the thick wire and what colour is the wire that never becomes live?

i cant remeber the colours at the moment,  I thought the thicker one was the main feed?  as it draws more current and the mem was the smaller one?   I might be wrong because you have to swap them in a golf anyway,  i tryed it both ways.   So the problem in that case is that i have no main feed what so ever?!
