cutting out

Hi! good to find such a site after all these years!!
I have a problem, I've got a 16v gti 1989. It's purred perfectly for 15 years. YES I said 15years!!
I have a issue now, the cars ben serviced regularly but it  cuts out when turning corners and when slowing down in traffic. This has only been happening really on  and off over the past 3 years. Servicing it seems to have little effect. Once garage adjusted the timing but that seemed to only work for a short time. Is there anything that I could check or has anyone had this problem occur to their golf?

I have been into my local garage today with a similar problem. They told me to clean the ISV (idle stabilisation valve?) with carb cleaner to see if that improves things.

Will try it tomorrow and report back.

They also got me a price for a new ISV - £240!!!

Well i cleaned my isv earlier and as expected it was full of oily carbon gunk. Was hoping the idle problem would now be sorted but alas no.

The car starts fine but wont tickover. Have to keep my foot on the accelerator to keep it running. Checked all the hoses and plug connection and all seems fine.

Could it be that the solenoid has had it?

could be a worn accelerator cable, if its been fine for 15 years and this has just happened that could be your problem. check for slack in the cable by the throttle body.

Update: It seems to have sorted itself out now. Perhaps I didnt let the isv dry out enough before refitting. Idle is much improved now.

You could check all the vacuum pipes to make sure one isnt split, its also worth checking the bits of braided pipe that the plastic vac hoses go into. I had a tiny leak in one of these on my 16V, the result was it changed the mixture and it made it run like a complete pig.
