I do like that clean look at the front of the car .

I'm currently looking at having a vinyl plate on the bonnet to get the same effect, but I haven't had a definitive answer as to the legality of the plate. You can get a vinyl made up with reflective film, so in effect the plate is legal. However the point that the plate should be as vertical as possible is the sticking point. Yours looks like a good alternative, but I'm having a Forge Twintercooler fitted and so do not want anything obstructing good ventilation, which a plate at that point would do.

....Everything I know (which some may say is very limited!!) tells me that ANY reduction/obstruction of an air intake is to be seriously avoided! The idea is to INCREASE air flow/intake, not to REDUCE it!!

It'll be interesting to hear the outcome of your number plate location enquiries, Hurdy. But I doubt you'll get anything in writing and without an official piece of paper, how are you going to insist you are legal when Mr Policeman stops you and you start arguing your case? I hope I'm wrong, but....

A number plate on one side may look pretty cool like the Alfa's. But I do agree with Red, dropping the plate in front of the grille will alter the air flow, and you don't want to be messing with the intercooler or you will find your car feeling very lethargic.

Or a square one like the Evo's

^^they move the clean up problem to the side of the car, and make it look worse imo (well will do on the golf)

he wont be able to, there is a perfectly good flat face to apply his plate to (one where millions of golfs have them LOL), it will never be legal to have the plate on the bonnet on a golf, he may get away with it forever, or he may get caught within an hour of doing it, either way its a risk
