well been told you can get 208+ from the 180bhp 1.8t lump  :undecided:

as for jap cars, i like them too. my old man had a couple of Celica's which rocked tbh, really nice to drive and quite fast. Also had a mate that was running an evo 4 for a bit which has to be the best car i have ever driven! just unreal, not sure why jap cars get a bad press!  :undecided:

as for looks, i like all the golfs, they can all be made to look sweet as. my fave has to be the mk1 mind, they just look superb!  dont mind the mk3's looks, and i love the mk4, dont need to do much to make them look good.

big fan of the booted vw's too, i find the bora better looking than the golf and also the vento is better than the mk3 golf  :undecided:

It all depends on your criteria for "The Best".

If you want a high revving tuneable engine, the maybe "the best" would be Japanese.
If you want cheap and fun and aren't worried about keeping it running long term, perhaps something French or Italian.

We're talking about Golfs though, so I think in some senses the Mk3 is the compromise car. It sits in between the modern looks, creature comforts and a bit of fun from a Mk4 and the classic looks, handling and great drive of a Mk2.

A Mk3 can be comfortable cruising on the motorway or sat in traffic on a hot day (with your aircon) but can still be fun when you find a windy B-road.
The Mk2 will be fun whenever you put your foot down, but you won't be quite so comfy in slow traffic, and it's unlikely you'll have aircon (very few Mk2 GTI's had it, though it was available).

As for cost, sure, you could buy something faster for less money, but it wouldn't be a VW. True a really good Mk2 is costing a bit more than an average Mk3, so you would get more (options and comfort) for your money. But then it's what do you actually want out of a car?
Do want something fast, or comfortable, or practical, or economical or cheap, or servicable? Or any combination of these.

I wanted something practical and cheap to insure, but I still wanted a Golf (cos I really missed having a VW while I deviated into something very cheap and italian), hence why I have a mk3 1.8 CL.

Lets all be friends and respect the mk3 whatever the engine...

you make some fair points - not all jap cars are crap -im not a blinkered VAG owner like some.... I also own a vectra as proof  lol

I have owned a MK2 16v, sister's first car was a MK1 1.6 GTI which I learnt to drive in. Dad had a MK driver 1.6. Best mate bought a VR6 when I bought my MK3 valver and was insured on his. Test drove a couple of mk3 8v before I bought my car, couple of people I worked with had 2.0 8v MK4's as company cars and was insured to drive them although I preferred my Mondeo titanium x diesel as it was quicker... guy I am in business with now has a MK5 GTI 5 door, my house mate drives a 110 GT TDI and other one has a mk3 8v....

anyway so have driven all the cars at some point that I made points about. If you are a jap car loving mk3 8v owner then it is understandable why you didn't like my comments.

I actually advised my house mate to get a mk3 8v as for the money there is very little cars that will be as reliable or comfortable etc - a car doesn't have to be fast to be nice as you said, I agree.

However, we are not talking about 'nice' cars, were talking about GTI's and if you think a 150 bhp valver is not much quicker than a 115 8 v then Im afraid you have either not driven one, or didn't take it past 4k rpm as you were used to your 8v running out of puff......

I was not trying to be a no-it-all, as its all down to preference and they are only opinions....

Jeez the valvers have a hole second advantage over the 8v and about ten mile per hour advantage on top speed! If the 8v are slow so are the 16v! You are clutching at straws I am so sick of reading the same arguments over and over!

mk3 8v....

0-60= 9.8s
top speed= 123mph
bhp=115

mk3 16v...

0-60= 8.0s
top speed= 135mph
bhp= 150bhp

They feel like completely different cars to drive.
Just test them both then make up your mind.
If you dont then you may be left thinking... "what would the other one have been like"

I have a mk3 16v and theres a family mk3 8v, but i always find myself getting in the 16v when I have a choice.

The 8v feels nippy low down (the nature of the 8v i guess), but on a dual carriageway or something, theyre completely different, if you have space to use the final 3-4000rpm on the 16v, it makes the 8v feel like the bottom of the range to me.

The mk4 8v 2.0 wasnt even a GTi in any other country other than the UK, as VW knew people would buy it here just for the badge.

Back to the mk3 though, it depends what you want... If insurance isnt a problem, As they seem to sell for roughly the same prices, you might as well get the 16v if you can find a nice one, as they are quicker, with not much difference on MPG terms.... but theres probably about 1 x 16v per 25 8v on the market so you might get bored of waiting for a decent one and just buy an 8v.

PS

I find myself wanting to drive my brothers mk2 16v more than the other two put together!

Yawn! You are right looking at those figures the 16v blows the 8v away ! I just don't see the point in these arguments! If people want a quick car why buy a mark 3 golf! Even the VR6 isn't the fastest thing! I have owned three golfs in my time and have always wanted a GTI! The mark 3 was in my price range so I took several cars out for tests! I loved the VR6 but the fuel bills would have crippled me! Fair enough the 16v was a bit quicker but I am not the kind of driver who enjoys revvin the tits outa cars anyway! So I went for the 8v! Oh and I have never regretted my decision! I never feel the need to go around tellin the mark 4 8v boys that their car doesnt deserve the badge either just cos mine is very slightly quicker!

I didnt say it doesnt deserve the gti badge. Think youre mixing youre people up.

I love all golfs. Im just trying to give Kingpin the best advice I can from experience, as he asked the question.

Its what the forum is for, no need to take it personally.
