I think you will find that new intercooler pipe delivers much better air flow for better efficiency and the new pipe wont kink etc

i think its a combination of both those things.  In all honesty i'm not entirely sure but upgrading tired, old pipework for nice shiney new stuff is all good.  And at less than half the original purchase price, i wasn't going to say no 

now, does anyone have an idea of how easy they are to fit......

should hold the boots pressure for longer i believe and shouldn't split like the OEM pipe tends to do
