In fairness this is a very reputable dealer that I bought my GTI from and Topher his R32.

They are a main dealer for another brand but have developed a side business specialising in sports cars - GTI's, R32's, Porsche, Lotus etc etc.

I very much doubt these guys would be selling a complete dog, my guess is that the bloke part ex'd it against something else and they played the "its an import" card on him.

I live round the corner so am going to pop in and check it over this afternoon for Steve to save him the long journey if there is something dubious about it.

I paid similar money to yours for a similar car, don't think you got that bad a deal. Don't forget we've got the DSG models and whatever the manual guys say the DSG's command a good premium over the manuals and you dont have the import supermarkets selling the DSG versions for £3K under list like you do the manuals.

Soz to hijack. I have recently been promoted and what not and work and get £290 (-tax :() a month for a car or get a company car. I've deciede to opt out of company car and have my own motor as I think its by far the better deal. I've just seen that your paying £230 for this. Do VW do a "lease" deal. Could I walk into a dealer and talk to them about this or is through a 3rd party? Dont be getting me excited about a MK5 lol (I was meant to be looking at either 1.8T or a BMW and now the MK5 is on the cards lol)

Mate don't do it!!! Take the company car.

£290 x 12 = £3500 per annum. You'll get taxed and NI'd on it meaning 30% of its gone = £2450 = £200 a month.

You have to purchase a car, insure it, tax it, service it, maintain it, put tyres on it etc etc.

I am a car nut, but if my company offered to swap my £5.5K car allowance for any decent company car I'd take it.

The last time I had a company car an entire street I'd been parked on had their rear windows smashed by people looking for valuables in the boot, it was so refreshing not having to make insurance claims or worry about the cost of repair.

Sorry if that sounds a bit negative, but most companies scrap the company car scheme for a reason - It costs more to lease and run the car than it does to give staff a car allowance. The only real way to make it work is to buy a £2-3K car so you dont suffer much from depreciation and get it serviced at independent garages but from what you say I guess thats not what your after.

Back on topic, I viewed the car on behalf of Steve today and can confirm it is as expected an excellent car and Steve has put a deposit down on it.

I'm sure he wont be dissapointed

As I said in the PM, thanks for doing that, very kind of you!  Certainly given me peace of mind that the car is as good as it looks in the photos

3 months of searching has come to an end

Deposit paid?  Check.

Finance approved?  Check.

Insurance sorted?  Check.

Signing paperwork...pending

Collecting car and zooming off into the distance...pending

Car Tax??

You'll need a physical insurance certificate to tax your car with.

Being done

My insurer is couriering a document to them tomorrow on a pre-1pm delivery so it can be taxed.  I'm signing the papers on Saturday and picking it up on Monday evening.  At least that's the plan at the moment...

Cool. I just remember that being my only stress as the insurer were a bit slowing at despatching the docs.

I had to pay £7.50 for a next-day service.  If it isn't there tomorrow I'm going to go knee-capping at Elephant!
