MFD2 Retrofit
« on: 25 March 2008, 20:20 »
Hi,

I've spent the day reading all the information on retrofitting an MFD2 sat nav to a MKV Golf.  I'm confident I can fit it OK, but I have read various stories of issues following installation such as a flat battery after 3 days, door locking and fault code issues etc.  For those that have fitted the MFD2, can you confirm if it really is plug and play or does it require any coding with VAGcom?  I'm looking for some reassurance before I dive in and fit one.  Your help would be appreciated.

Cheers

Joe

I had thought the same but became concerned after reading a few horror stories, unless they were just dodgy units?  Perhaps someone who has fitted an MFD2 could reassure me?  Thanks!

I fitted mine and have had no problems. I had the same worries as you so bought mine from a shop though just incase the unit was faulty. But there was no problem.

With regard to the faults being logged i beleive that they commonly occur if the ignition is turned on when some of the sensors in the dash are unplugged. The on board computer logs a fault as they have something to do with the airbag . If you follow the following you can't go wrong, I mean if i can do it anyone can

hope that helps

You can use VAG-COM to change the coding from radio to navigation but I didn't until recently and saw no difference.

If you are in any way DIY then its easy.

I fitted a MFD2 DVD into my 05 GTI a few weeks ago, the friend who helped me (who works for company that deals with engine management fault codes for different garages) thought that the VAGcom might need to be told that the NAV unit was installed.

As it turns out it seemed to work fine except that I have difficulty playing audio CDs, they just stop or most of the time the unit thinks An incorrect DVD is inserted.
I am not sure if this is down to a faulty unit or some VAGcom issue (is this why they are on ebay)

I did consider sending it back, but decided it was too much hassle as I wanted to leave the NAV DVD in all the time anyway and use my ipod.

I installed a ribbon cable (half of an IDE cable) into the AUX connector so I could connect the ipod, and connected to the audio line in pins.

Also the instructions that i used and printed out ended up at the local VW dealer as they very interested too see how the swap was done (they had never done one)

does this give you any better options as i am considering the kenwood unit as you get bluetooth and control the ipod and can see track listings etc, where as the ipod link is shyte on the oem units, it doesn't allow you to do anything.

No this option is just simply audio in via the AUX with no control from any external controls, I just simply fed a 3.5mm jack plug into the bottom of my arm rest, but you can have navigation active at the same time when you are listening. (unlike the internal CD)
