Help what is it????

Its a thickish bosch wire bolted with 13mm bolt to the front of the head and then connects to a connecter. ITs to the left of the Temp switch and lower down. Its black covered, mine is split and theres a thick silver wire underneath.

any ideas please........

is it the knock sensor thingy, take it its an 8v

Yes is an 8v,

Whats this do then as the black covering is cracked and I can see the wire underneath....Wandering if its worth getting another one.

found this on ebay, can cause the engine to run rough if damaged. when fitting a new one make sure you torque it correctly as you can brake it or it won't work properly

make sure you get the right one this is for 86-89

Cheers mate I'll check the part num on mine is correct as mine isn't a green connection but is an 89 golf.

Just searched an its 20nm wander if this could be my rough idle problem...

they expensive to buy from the main stealer.

From a recent thread on here it's about £50 from VW.  It manages the advance and retard on the ignition, so your engine runs properly.

Well you could always go find one in a scrapyard - they're fitted to pretty much all of the injected motors in the VW range from that era. 

That's surely pocket-fodder from a scrappy.
