I remember a lot of speculation last year that the 230 engine was going to replace the standard 200 in the GTI for 2008, now if that had happened I guess ED30 owners would be kicking off even more. So if 1500 ends up 2000 so what, surely better than having hundreds or thousands of GTI's running around with the same engine in, would have had an even worse knock on residuals

Hi KentBladeboy,

The principle of this topic is that VW stated that no more than 1500 units would be produced of the ED30 (please see VWUK pdf on MKIV thread). I understand that both GTI models are not mainstream, hence limited supply. I’m not fussed about residuals compared to the GTI as they’re both exceptional cars... and I’ll also be keeping mine for some condsiderable time.

The fact is, VW have probably increased the number of ED30s to see them out until the Golf VI is introduced next year. The Pirelli Edition isn’t coming over and it looks like the standard GTIs specification will remain as it is.

I just feel that VWUK have to stand up and be counted and be answerable to us.. it’s loyal fans.
I have phrased my letter firmly, yet politely and have enclosed a printout of the original VW pdf. If you don’t enclose the VW letter they don’t take you seriously and send you a stock ‘sorry’ response. With the original VW letter they seemed to be taking it very seriously and are grouping all our concerns into one main issue.

So if you feel VW have acted shabbily then why not drop them a line... it’ll only cost you a couple of stamps... it’s worth a go!
I would recommend sending your letters to both addresses (Sheffield & Milton Keynes).

I’ll keep you updated... cheers... Hotrod

Understand where you are coming from, but lets be honest once they have your money, they don't care, its been proved time and time again, loyal or not, they treat their customers like sh*te, even getting the cars fixed can be hard enough.

Anyway, good luck with the campaign, just can't honestly see what the end result can be, they are hardly gonna buy back cars 1501 onwards and crush them are they?

Interesting thread, hope you get some joy out of it.

Is that Mr. Crabster spanner a member on here?

I’ve never seen him over here... he sure was a pain on the other thread.

I guess I’ve been lucky with my experience with VW dealers. Breeze in Poole were very helpful (in and out of warranty) and Loders in Dorchester have so far been exceptional.

I think a little goodwill from VW would go down well. It’s not about the cash... it’s the principle. Sometimes the little fella has to stand up and be counted.

Agree up to a point Hurdy but if they had only limited Ed30's to 1500 I'd have never gotten mine

One of the MAIN reasons I sold my R32 and went for the Ed30 was that it was limited.  If the Ed30 wasn't limited I would never have got one.

I think I'll take the time and write to them too.  I'm wondering whether people who own Ed30's would be willing to e-mail a template letter to VW also complaining.

Hi guys,

As requested, this may be useful.

The two addresses you need are:
VW UK Customer Care, Selectapost 12, Sheffield  S97 3ZU
VW UK Customer Care, Yeomans Drive, Blakelands, Milton Keynes  MK14 5AN

The original VW pdf is here:
http://www.peterhope.plus.com/gti/Edition30memo.pdf

Here is a portion of my letter, please don’t cut & paste... just adjust to suit your own needs:

Re: Golf GTI Edition 30... Limited Edition or not?

Dear Sir/Madam,
I have just taken delivery of my new Golf GTI Edition 30 and I must say how delighted I am with the car and the supplying dealership. I compared your closest rivals such as BMW and Audi, however when it came down to it my brand loyalty and the quality of your product persuaded me. In the final analysis I chose the GTI Edition 30. It had everything the standard GTI offered plus the limited edition kudos of only 1,500 units, a more powerful engine, upgraded half-leather upholstery, colour coded bodykit, 18" wheels and various interior upgrades and branding. The additional cost for this halo model I decided was acceptable especially given the fact that it was specifically limited to only 1,500 units. I was led to believe that it would be more desirable in the long-term, perhaps even a classic. So imagine my surprise when I was informed recently that it is no longer a ‘limited edition’ model! I was very disappointed! I set about researching the media and it transpires that the Edition 30 is now available to order freely.

Please find attached a copy of your two-page document (26.10.06) which outlines your position on the Edition 30, where it clearly states under the Volumes section that the Edition 30 is ”limited to 1,500 units”. Also as you are aware, the standard GTI interior has now been upgraded to full Vienna leather (a NCO of £1645). This now makes the GTI even more desirable and, in my opinion, the Edition 30 overpriced! What I’d like you to address is two issues. The first is the fact that the Edition 30 is no longer a limited edition model and consequently its desirability has been greatly reduced, and also that the upgraded standard GTI is now a very attractive package which potentially undermines and further devalues the halo effect of the Edition 30. These are both very important issues, so I would appreciate your serious consideration and what possible goodwill you will be offering.

Yours......

I hope this helps... but just to repeat, please don’t copy & paste as it looks like your letter hasn’t been considered.

Cheers buddies... Hotrod

A thought...

If you really want to get your point across to VWUK I would recommend writing to them, as opposed to emailing. Emailing is cool for quick, informal communication, however to be taken seriously (IMO) a quality, considered letter always has more clout and gravitas!

You could always do both! Get writing guys... Hotrod
