« on: 29 February 2008, 17:26 »
Hey guys. Kindly russ has offered to install a GTi cam on my 1.6 driver. But he has asked me if i can find out how to time a 1.6, he is not sure if its the same as the GTi. he just needs to make sure which marks go where. Any help? pictures would help. thanks.

Check the haynes book-it all makes sense (surprisingly!!). When you do it, make sure u have some tip-ex or something similar just to define the marks so you know excatly which ones to watch!!

I had a 1.6 driver last year and put the gti cam in. Just line up the marks on the top and botom pulleys, check the dizzy as per haynes
,turn it over by hand and recheck marks etc before starting. Then...

I just took it for drive and tweaked the dizzy every few miles untill it felt right.

Anticlockwise advances it and clockwise retards it. Small movements make a big change!

You can tell when your too far advanced when the car lurches forward on very light throttle applications,
and can hear pinking on heavy throttle/heavy load.

I did this a few times and that was it.
