Mod or sell?
« on: 24 February 2008, 03:29 »
Well guys, I'm at a loss. I got an essentially standard (at the moment) AGU 1.8T. Its 1998 S reg, with 114k on it (VWSH-ish, last BIG service by Star performance at 100k, did the last couple myself, as I'd uprated filters and brakes, used only genuine VW parts).  I am only the second owner of the vehicle aswell.  Black, 3 Dr, essentiall standard (Miltek cat-back and Forge DV and Green cotton filter fitted, Tar-ox sport Japan discs up front, green stuff discs at back, and green stuff pads all round, them smoked hella rear lights).

Anyway, so I got a (brand new) K03s turbo, TT225 Injectors, Miltek Sports Cat, 4 bar FPR, N75J valve all ready to go on.  Was about to purchase coilovers, BBS RC's, Anni headlights, get the windows tinted, and a full RR remap.  Was hoping for in the region of 240 BHP and a nice looking motor too boot (was probably gonna send to bodyshop for a touch up too, few car park chips, stone chips etc... needing sorted out).

SO, my question is this.  Is it worth me fitting all this stuff?  OK, I'll have a nice looking motor, but then, I could  sell all the parts, put the car back to standard (apart from brakes, DV and filter), and I dunno, rather than spending another 2-3k on the car, I could get maybe 3.5k for car (if I'm lucky), another 1k for parts (again, if im lucky), and put that 2k towards another car?  So thats close to 6k toward a new motor, where I have just seen a VERY similar car to mine priced at just over 3.5k (all mods done).  I dunno, I'm so confused.  I would like a ANNI TDI for example, or an S3, or something similar, but then, a 240 BHP AGU would be nice.  Just dont know if its gonna be WORTH spending that money on it or not?  And for what?  I was hoping for an S4 by this time next year anyway, so the golf would just be out at weekends regardless....

What would you guys do?  Any opinions welcome

tricky one really  :undecided:

another way would be to sell the parts and keep the car until you see something you really like.

if it was me; i'd be tempted to fit all the parts, get all the work done and keep it until it runs no more.  at the end of the day your golf is a known quantity.  if you bought another car that could be riddled with faults and cost you lots more than you planned.

with 114K on the clock youf Golf has a lot of life left and with the mods you're giving it a mini rebuild which would mean it would be good for another 114K.

looking at the pics its too good to sell  and with the mods you could turn it into a bit of a sleeper :afro:

Well.  It has been a long time since I posted so an update.

So, I decided to go ahead and do up the car, by no means finished yet, but here is what I did...

Fitted the k03s, TIP, Sports Cat, Coilovers, had to change the discs up front (Black Diamond), and took it for remap.
Well, my TT225 injectors wouldn't fit and even with the 4 bar FPR, was only getting 208 BHP on the rollers.  This was because the standard injectors were at 100% duty cycle.  So got some Bosch Green top 440cc, back to 3 bar FPR, and they are still a little too much, lol.  Still, sitting at 225 BHP just now.

BUT, N75 valve (J) was incorrectly fitted, so boost maxxed at 13 psi.  This has been corrected, and will go back.  I took her for a spin after fitting it right, and there was a LOT more boost, woo hoo.  Right up until my clutch gave up.  So there is a VR6 clutch and G60 flywheel going on this weekend before going back for some more RR tunning.  Hoping for another 15-20 BHP...

So, thats my update.  Oh yeah, got a set of Anni headlights on there now, with HID's aswell.  Now looking for some alloys.  Would like some BBS RC's or LM's.  But probably cant afford either now, lol.

NOPE.  Afraid not.  The problem is that there are at least 2 different injector styles.  EV6 and EV12.  AGU seem alone.  the AUM, AUQ etc... engines are different.

Hence my TT's a good for conversions on later model engines, but AGU engines, it wont fit...

Well, thats the thing.  Didn't have the time to go hunting for a bargain, so phone Jabbasport, and for £240 had them next day at the tunning company, so they could carry on.

I'm sure if you were to look around, you could maybe get them for half that.  My mate got a set for his A4 (1998), can't remember where, but they were about £180.

Genesis 415cc injectors would have probably been the cheaper, more suitable option, but they weren't in stock.  I think, if you have the time, and aint in the rush I was, you could save a lot of money importing them from the states, regardless of import taxes...
