mk3 2ltr 8v in Mk1 info? can anyone help?
« on: 21 February 2008, 11:39 »
HI all - posted this in the mk 3 section but no joy there...can anyone help here?

Im asking this on behalf of a mate without a computer: he currently has a 1970 VW camper (bay) running a 1.8 K-jet 8 valve from a scirooco/golf mk 1 - its just blown the head gasket.  As a replacement he has been offered a free 2ltr 8valve from a mk 3 and wants to fit this.

Ignoring the fact that this engine is in a VW camper he is essentially going to be switching the Mk 1 Gti k-jet with a Mk 3 digifant 8v. Has anyone undertaken this swop in a golf??

The most important difference is obviously the ECU / engine loom wiring - is there a wiring diagram out there anywhere showing which wires to use etc - even a standard gti mk 3 diagram would be a start.

Ideally does anyone know anyone who has done a similar swop - i imagine its fairly old school by todays standards but someone must have done it somewhere. Will he also need to upgrade to the later fuel pump? or will the delivery of the mk1 pump be adequate?

Any info, links or contacts would be gratefully received.

Cheers

I think there will be a lack of info on this as it's not a common swap (I've never heard of it, but that's not to say it hasn't happened) as people would normally go from 8v k-jet to 16v k-jet so still no ECU etc. There have been TDIs and G60, G40 & 1.8T swaps and these have more info kicking about, but mk3 8v, I'm not sure you'll find a lot. You could always try Edition38 forum to see if there's any info on this over there. Sorry I can't be of any greater help.

Why don,t you get ak jet cylinder head of a early mk2 8 valve and mate it too the 2.0 block then know need too worry about wiring of injection. Good luck
i was told the 020 rod box was supposed to be a strong box,how wrong are they 5 and counting on my mk2. Hopefully the quaiffe box will last.

I have mk3 diagrams,  pm me your email addy and I'll send em your way.  Only issue will be the fuel lines, what you would need to do is get the 2 lines to/from the MK1 metering head, and chop the rubber pipes off the threaded ends.  this will give you a barbed fitting you can push the mk3 fuel lines onto, and thread onto the k-jet tank return/pump lines :)

Other option is as said, run the lump on k-kjet.  To do this you need a MK1/2 GTI 8v cylinder head, any will do fine but for ease of use I'd get a late MK2 head as it has hydro tappets so no need to mess about with shims.  Then you need to fit k-jet injector inserts if its not got htem already, and modify your old k-jet dizzy to fit.  To do this you need a dizzy adaptor ring from TSR, and you gotta swap the dizzy gear from the MK3 dizzy to your k-jet one.

Bit of faffing about with the breather plumbing, and thats it!
