mk2 (clunk)
« on: 19 February 2008, 19:36 »
my mk2 has started to make a clunk/knock when i go over bumps etc.
my mate checked it at the weekend and the balljoints antirollbar bushes and wishbones looked fine too him,the car pulls a little to the left and when i accelerate the steering feels a little light(has manual steering rack)and drifty.
if i slow right down and go across a speedbump the clunk comes when i'm just going over the crest,if u know what i mean.

had the springs, shocks and topmounts done last year(all standard)  any ideas?

check ya steering rack / steering colome.   the little bush at on my colome was warn (were it joins the rack) and it felt like the front end of the car is gunna fall off!!! lol  (sound like a exhuast clunk but from the front yeh??)

only on speed bumps and a bumpy road etc.   my steering was also drifty till i put some 17`s on the car.

or ya exhuast may of dropped and it could be hitting the rear sub frame??? (mine done that when some 1 nicked me exhaust mounts lol

hope this helps,    aint no expert but just going form past experience.

when i bought my daily the front subframe was loose (one of the encapsulated nuts sheared off inside the chassis leg... not good! means you cant do the bolt back up)

needless to say this was clunking over bumps, or if i pulled away sharply PLUS it felt drifty.

park the car up, grab each front wheel and rock it forwards and back and see if it has a life of its own!

its not too expensive to sort, my garage cut the floor pan, welded in a new nut and sealed it all back up again for £90.00

I don't think a semi will give the same results

i had this and it turned out to be a chunk of old spring sat in the front suspension cup!

engine mounts are fine, subframes ok aswell as is the exhaust.i had recently replaced the 2 front tyres after thatthis clunk noise started and its getting worse.
i've ordered 2 new wishbones with powerflex bushes fitted and new powerflex bushes for the anti rollbar and steering rack.got new balljoints too.
the sound is comming from the wishbone area
