the std one is discontinued, but you can still get a diesel type with a threaded hole in it

037 121 687 - seal - 1.60 (think this is the right one, dealer should confirm)

To plug the hole you can fit an mfa oil temp sensor or a 16v coolant temp sensor

Thanks for that, I'll see how this one goes and if it isnt any better I might get the ones you've listed. I'm just supprised that even with a genuine part fitted it still appears to be leaking

I had the same problem. I replaced the flange on the side of the head but it started leaking soon after. I  took it off again and placed it on a piece of glass. You could see that it was warped. This was probably because I had done up the bolts too tight. I think you only need 10Nm torque - not much at all.

I bought another one, cleaned up the surface thoroughly with some wet and dry, then I applied some hylomar blue gasket sealant to the head before fitting the new flange. I also used a torque wrench so I wouldn't over tighten the bolts. It never leaked again. Well, not from there anyway!

Seems to be O.K at the moment but I'll see what its like as the week goes on and if it still steams from the same place I might end up using some sort of sealer or liquid gasket, fingers crossed it wont need it
