It doesn't "click in", its one push forward for on, and another push forward for off. This happened to mine and it was the rear wiper relay. A new one off ebay sorted it out. Try pulling the relay and cleaning the contacts first.

Relay diagram can be found in this thread:  http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=44637.10

It could also be a seized motor or arm, or a break somewhere along the power cable to the motor.

Push once quickly to turn on, push once quickly to turn off again.  When on in this mode it will wipe at intervals of a few seconds.

Push and hold to spray water on the rear, this also sets off a continuous wiping cycle that will go on for about 5 wipes after you let go and then go back to its previous state - ie. on or off.

Hope this helps!

The Mk2 stalks are a bit weird. They only got it right by the time the Mk4 came along (in my opinion anyway). The main beam annoys me as you try and flash someone and end up turning the main beams on, blinding them in the process.

Have probs with rear wiper on mine too. I replaced the relay with a second hand one and only got one wipe out of it before it stopped working again.
More investigation found a completely siezed wiper shaft (the bit that goes through the boot lid) Lots of WD40, sweat etc needed to free it. Got it all put back together and it still don't work!
Do relays 'burn out' or is there a fuse I should be checking? How can you test a relay?

Couple of ideas...

1) The inside of the fuse box cover shows you what fuse is what.

2) If the relay is still working, you should be able to hear it "click" on and off as it sends each signal to the wiper (even if its jammed).

3) You could also check the wiper stalk - the copper contacts might be corroded (doubt it though).

4) Try taking the wiper arm mechanism off the motor and try it again as to see if the motor works with less resistance

5) Use a multimeter to check your getting volts at the wiper. If not its either fuse or wiring as I don't think the relay stops the current it just "switches" it across the wires.
