Height Adjustable Koni help Question (my 1st post!)
« on: 21 January 2008, 19:46 »
Hi Guys.

Ive just bought my first Mk2 16v GTI  (ive owned 205gtis, mi16, saab 93, skylines and mk4 gt tdi previously)

The tyres are scrubbing on the arches, but apparently it has h/a konis. My question is, if I take the wheel off on the weekend will I need any special tools? or any advice anyone can give me?

Finally, im tempted to take an angle grinder to the arches (but only a bit, before I hit any structural areas), as the car looks good nice n low.

theres some pics on the ebay page:

Cheers

You'll need a c -spanner for the coilies in order to adjust them.

As for the angle grinder, take out as much as you like at the front, they aint structural. The rear are however so you cant take much out at all. You may just wanna do a DIY roll on them to be safe.

cheers for the reply, where can I get a C-Spanner? and will I need to tension up the springs etc? or just elbow grease.

The tyres seem to be rubbing on the inner plastic square edge of the arch, where by do you roll? - and is that a pliers job?

I will take a good look on the weekend when there is a bit of day light.

Thanks again

Should be able to just use elbow grease to wind them up.
As for a C - spanner, take a good look tru your car incase the previous owner left it there. Short of that, the suspension makers will sell them, maybe halfrauds, im not too suree on that one?

as for the rubbing, im not sure where you mean. If its on the underside of the arch extensions (as mine did) i just cut the plastic with a saw, noone sees under there anyway. If you mean the arch liners you can take them out or cut them back also.
Im not going to discuss my metal arch rolling technique here as i will probably be slated for being a pikey etc etc.

How is me sat on your front wing holding a breaker bar between the tyre and arch as you drive up and down pikey???

Back on topic:

Just out of interest, are the tyres scrubbing all round or just the front, just the back, just one side etc? Another question, what size are the wheels and what offset and also what tyres are fitted?

The tyres are scrubbing on all four corners. The wheels are 16" (see the ebay link above). Bt im not sure of the offset or size to be honest.

Im thinking raise it slightly first of all, as I have H/A Koni Coilovers.

Do you know If I can get C spanners in the highstreet? Halfords etc? Also, are there different size C spanners, or does 1 size fit all?

cheers for the advice dudes

ok, a quick update, I just got a C spanner from a local hardware store.

I tried turning the bottom disc both ways but it wont budge!
Im gonna soak them in WD40 and see if that helps.

Other than that, maybe a bar on the end of the spanner will help?

ALSO there doesnt seem to be any obvious grooves etc on the shocks so it is a case of turn and hope?

Anyone got any tips, i suspect I turn the lower one to get it out the way, then raise the one above it? (there is a thinner spring above this, then another disc, then the main spring above that).

Sounds like theyre seized up. Give em a good soaking in WD40 and leave it to soak in.

I think your right as far a turning the plates are concerned, raising the top one will raise the suspension. However looking at koni coilovers for sale it seems you may not have konis, as they dont seem to have helper springs  :undecided:

You could try jacking it up to take some of the spring pressure off the bottom plate.
