Several problems with my golf!
« on: 14 January 2008, 13:56 »
Hi Guys, I have several problems with my mk2 8v gti (88)

a) When i first start in the morning, It's starts then drops to about 200rpm then cuts out, Then i have to restart it and have to put my foot on the gas to stop it cutting out, For about 5 minutes then it's fine restarts without a problem.

b)smoke's quite a bit (didn't when i first got it) and uses quite a lot of oil, The HG is fine No water is used.

c) when i get out on the Motorway, I'll get up to about 5-6k rpm and it will start yo yo ing (The rev counter) it also feels like it has lost lots of power since i first got it
Just went for a drive up the shops and noticed
in addition........

d) if i slam the anchors on i get a knocking sound? slowing from about 60 on the way up to roundabouts

Thanks for any help in advance

This could be the blue temp sender on top of the coolant flange, replace with VW only. Or it is more likely the ISV stuck in hot position like mine was! Try cleaning it with carb cleaner till the fluid run out clean, also clean the throttle body while you have the tools out  check the mk2 maintaince section for rubjonny's guide. http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33253.0

try here for valve stem seals http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=69439.0

If it only the rev counter..... must be a conection/earth problem? try disconnecting the hall sender and checking for corrosion.

depends where the sound comes from, exhaust knocking? check rubbers. If it's up front then I'm not too sure but I would try and go gentle till you fix it!

I had the idle problem when I was first starting up and I did what fused said...cleaned the ISV and throttle body but I also got a new breather bung for under the flying saucer (£5 off the bay from) as this can cause the prob and I found the tube that went from the flying saucer to the throttle body was also really shoddy so I replaced that (bout £15 from vw) and so far so good...touch wood....it's sorted

Anybody used John Mitchell Racing? I was recommended to them by a friend with a G60 Rado,
