I guess so, but IMO there's nothing better than a tidy standard MK2 Golf with shiny paintwork.

you've convinced me now its goin ratty! i'm gonna paint the bonnet first and see how i like it then do the lot in matt balck! any recommendations for paint? i wont be using masonary paint lol..

i'd like to get some bbs ra's jammed in the arches. i'm looking at the 15s but i want to go faily wide without having to go into surgery on the arches. whats the suitable limit on rim width the standard steelies are 13*5j with a +38mm offset? would 7j be too much? front and rear?

i love rat and i have ratted a few of my previous rides. i did it to a camper once and trippled money on the sale!  i dont see it as a waste of a car. like the dude mentioned in the original post, he wants a full respray but has to do it himself and knows it wont be great.  this is why i did my first ratter.  i think a badly executed "normal" paint job looks far far worse than a badly executed matt paint job.  at the end of the day its still a golf and it can always be painted properly in the future.  the only thing i am not keen on is removing all the paint and making it rust. you cant force patina!

yh i agree with you on that one lewis i hate it when people leave it to rust. but thanks for that link dubsport exactly what i was looking for did you complete yours in the end? and i kno people tried to clear this up in that thread but i'm being a div and my brain int fuctioning properly to paint it matt black you need to:

rub it down to bare metal
apply the 'scotch'
spray over it in satin
spray over that with matt black

is that right? i was just thinking i could rub it down a bit, where there are rusty parts put some sort of rust killer on over it. then spray a primer and then spray your matt black on that. would this be ok or would it still rust under the paint work? in the method above is the satin used as a primer then?

cheers guys

ref painting matt black -  in simple terms, rub down your paint, do any rust reps you feel necessary (they'll probably be rusty again in 6 months though!) spray with primer. gentle rub down of the primer then paint on the matt black.

stand back and admire how hard your car looks
