Which Tyres should I buy
« on: 06 January 2008, 12:37 »
I have had my GTI for 2 months now and have 17 inch monzas.  They weren't great when I bought it an I will be replacing them soon.  What ones should I buy?  I want ones that will last a decent amount of time. What should I expect to pay.  I live in Belfast, Nothern Ireland and would be interested to know if anyone knows a good place to go.

Cheers

Hi mate,

Im in Belfast too. I just changed my tyres on my MK5 R32. I went to the Modern Tyre Service place on Onslow Parade just off the Cregagh Road. A guy there called Ken did me a good deal on a pair of Vertiseen Sesantas for my 18inch Zolders. I have been more than happy with them.

Did you see the full tyre test in EVO magazine a few months ago ?

The test was done on a Golf GTI MkV with 17" Monzas.

The Overall Final Scores were  :-

1. Goodyear F1 Asymetric 96.4
2. vredestein 95.4
3. continental 93.5
4. bridgestone 92.7
5. michelin 92.4
6. pirelli 92
7. kumho 88.7
8. dunlop 86
9. yokohoma 82

and one non track test which, IMO, is more like the real world for ordinary motoring :

Subjective Road Route Test (25mins on mix of surfaces)
The tyres were driven blind

1. Vredestein 100%
2. Dunlop 92.5%
3. Michelin 90.5%
4. Pirelli 89.4%
5. Goodyear 88.9%
6. Bridgestone 88.1%
7. Kumho 87.0%
8. Continental 86.5%
9. Yokohama 76.2%

Im really pleased to see the results for the Vredestein ones. I had no idea about them only the tyre guy recommended them. They took about 50 miles to 100 miles to get their full grip but they now seem as good as the continentals that came on my R32. In the wet and in the dry. Thumbs up from me for them!
