maybe a bad connection?

my book says the running temp should be just the the left of the light bulb. altho mine runs about there, i do know that the fan kicks in when i sotp the car, so i presume things are ok.

Does your fan kick in at all?

If it varies with just hte lights being turned on it does sound like a conection to me?

bad earth, run a new earth between the side of the head/rocker cover and coil bracket if there isnt one there, later cars got these and its said to effect the dash.  Also pop the clocks out and check for brown wires in the dash clock loom, run a fresh wire from here direct to the chassis :)
