Running rubbish - could it be the injectors?
« on: 11 December 2007, 18:34 »
Got a bit of an annoying problem. I've managed to fix my battery issues, but in the process somehow messed the whole car up.
The car starts and idles lovely, but when you rev the car past just under 2000rpm the power cuts out and the fuse box and relays make a noise like a machine gun.
Any ideas folks, it's driving me insane.
I think it could be relay 32, if this makes any sense to anyone.
Or do you think it could be earthing issues or something much worse?

I've just seen that the plug going into the throttle valves at the back of the inlet manifold is shagged, one of the wires isn't connected/
Do you think that this would cause this problem?
If it is where could i get one as the plug has snapped at the connection so cannot reconnect it.

I'd say you could have found the problem there mate.  Contact VAG to get a new plug, or a breakers, and then resolder and heatshrink the cables up.

Cheers,
James

iirc 32 is the fuel pump relay on an 8v digifant, try another one 1st.  the broken wire wont cause the problems you mention, but will make the idle rubbish so get it fixed ;)
It could be the lift pump has packed in, so if problem pewrsists check it by disconnecting the electrical plug to the main pump under the car, driver side in front of rear wheel.  Turn the key 1 click and you should hear the in-tank pump run for a few seconds, if not it dead!

Right, it's not the disconnected wire, i've fixed that and it hasn't made a difference.
I'm pretty much sure that the clicking is coming from relay number 80, i've replaced it, and again no difference.
The only thing i have done is to disconnect the battery and clean the terminals, when i reconnected it the problems started. Could i have blown a fuse somewhere, i've checked all the obvious ones. Or is there internal parts in the ISV or fuel pump which i could have broken somehow.
It's driving me insane

80 is the ECU relay, see if you can put your finger on each relay as you rev it, this will help you track down which relay is doing the clicking.  The ISV wont be causing the problem, I'd say fuel pumpo or pump relay, or you got damage to your loom!

Well i've replaced the fuel pump and ECU relay. No joy there. Will have to investigate the fuel pump, if it is the sender, is this the replacement part?

and can you get them from GSF or similar?

Right, i've replaced the relays i though were suspect and making funny noises, 32 and 80.
I've checked all the earth straps and all connectors relating to the fuel.
And still no joy.
I've tested to see if i can hear the lift pump without the main pump, and i can, so guessing thats ok.
I really need some ideas, i'm clean out.
Any help would be appreciated, or is there anyone in the Manchester area with a good knowledge of golfs who can come and have a look, i'll happily pay them, just really don't want to have to fork out on garage bills.

THe only thought i have is that it could be the injectors, can you kill these suddenly? Like by shorting a wire or such like?
