Exactly as above.  The coolant temp doesn't drop to zero because the air con is on.

Does anybody have any idea where the temp sensor is or wherabouts so i can change it myself? The problems not been sorted so im gonna replace it. Or even a link to a page which tells u where? Cheers guys



Btw previous posters were right a/c on or off should not affect it

Mine has started doing something similar now.  It gets up to temperature then drops back down to zero, or 1/4 for a minute or so before going back up.  It still seems to be running okay at the moment though.

Hello All

It's not just the temp sensor that causes this as i've just fixed the same problem on my 98 gti turbo 1.8.
First stop is change the temp senser which is easy, if it still does it then you have to change the engine thermostat as well.
Don't waste time buying half a dozen temp sensors. I had exactly the same problem on my BMW 318is.
