We'll Ive told him I want £380 or we go through insurance, he wont pay so says we'll go through insurance.... Might be a right off though, I mean £380 on a car which is worth £750?

If they right it off, buy it back, use the cash left over to buy a 2nd hand bumper and fit it yourself, its only 4 bolts holding it on

Pretty easy IF they let you.

They'll take the amount they'll pay you for the total loss (lets say £750),then deduct the amount they deem it to be worth in scrap (lets say £150) and then deduct your execess (lets say £250). This will leave you with your car and a cheque for £350.

The only downside is your car will be registered as a write off but to be honest with cars of this age if you have photographic evidence of the damage and repair most people won't give a monkey's when you sell it.

if wrote off just tell them you want the car back and you will get paid what they value car as minus scrap value as stated already and if they deduct your excess you can claim it back also you may have to have a vehicle id check done
on the bright side you could end up with a car and some free spending money

My car was written off after an accident, I think it was a Cat C write off- Uneconomical to repair, It may devalue the car as this gets registered on the log card, and any future buyer will need to know this. However, If the car is only worth £750 it's not too much of a problem.
There will also be a bit of running around for you to do after the car is repaired- vehicle I.D check etc.
It's worth it though, these are great cars.

let me know if you want any more details.

Ask the insurance to do a contract price repair, to save the car being "written off", ie, you agree a price that comes in under the amount, that would have written the car off, you find a second hand bumper, get it painted and fitted, job done...

I had a Mk2 written off. Panels dented, some mindless idiot. Obviously not my fault, it was parked, lost the excess...you always do unless you have xtra cover. Bought it back and just continued to drive it 'till I had time to mend it. Never any ministry intervention of any sort.

I had a situation like this. I didn't loose the no claims discount, but whilst the claim was underway it got put on hold.
So when it was time to renew I had to pay full price untill the claim was made against the other driver. My other party had no insurance tax or a license, this is generally why people want to do a deal . I wouldn't trust this deal. He could just back out anytime. My insurance took the driver to court and once they obtained some cash my no claims was reinstated.

I'm sorry but that is awful! Why would they even think of penalizing you, whether or not he was done for no tax/insurance/license!
