water under the seat and oil on the floor
« on: 25 November 2007, 11:49 »
hi
this is my 1981  mk1 gti 1.6 that I bought in the summer.

does anybody know what kind of arches they are?
its got a vinyl roof. was that ever an option when it was bought?

the problem is that it has a huge puddle under the drivers seat and in the drivers footwell.
where could that water come from? could it be the door seal?

another problem is that it leeks a tiny bit of oil. could that be the rocker cover gasket? i saw that there was some oil running down the back of the block. or could it be something else?

cheers
seb

Try checking the drain holes on either side of the scuttle panel under the windscreen. They get clogged with leaves and stuff and the water builds up and finds a way in. Thanks to some channels in the floorpan, the water can also run in under the carpets and can gather in the rear of the car as well, leaving the front dry and the back carpets soaking.

There's been numerous posts on the forum about the strange places water gets in, and this seems to be the most common.

As for oil, I leave that to the experts. I know nothing about the options list of early Golfs but in the heady days of the early eighties I would imagine a lot of cars had a nice vinyl toupee slapped on them. My mum had a Mk1 Fiesta with one ffs!

I will have look at the drain holes tomorrow.
It seems like the water is running down the by the A pillar along the door seal.
I have also discoverd some water in the boot now. some sits right by the bootlid seal. is worth getting new seals. if yes, where can I get them from (couldnt find any on gsf)

anybody got an idea where the oil could be coming from?

is there a bumper to go with zender kit?

cheers for the link! some cool bodykits there

I think I have discovered the leak. Its by the A pillar, where the gutter comes down. that is rusted through  and I think the water is coming through there. that would explain why there is such a big puddle under the drivers seat, because of all the water thats running down that gutter.

I know its common for a mk1 to rust trough there, but is it common to leak there too because of the rust?

Im just gone get some pics now.

http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?board=41.0 this is a sub section in this mk1 section,

not sure if it will help you directly, but check it out and get to know mk1 faults like the back of your hand! Saves questions being asked over and over :)

There is also a search button at the top of the page which might help so you can find threads that are of similar topics!

:) Good luck with your mk1! they are always good fun!

the cars are bound to be rusty in places...

just remember if you fix it right now it will last for years!

prevention is better than the cure or something!?!?!?

reminds me.. i must get cab fixed.. haha!
