noise when changing gear
« on: 27 October 2007, 21:28 »
i have a mk3 gti 16v, over the last week or so the car has developed a whine type noise on the intial gear change in every gear, it happens at a certain point on the clutch engaging a gear, when the clutch is halfway up from engaging a gear it makes a whine noise for a split second.
i experimented today when i heard the noise at gear change i held the clutch at a certain point and continued to make noise.
if anyone can understand what i have just rambled on about can they lend some advice lol
many thanks

Sounds like you've found the problem yourself, slipping clutch.

Your clutch is on its way out.

dodgy synchro would mean either a gearbox rebuild or source a decent second hand one :)

just to clarify the noise isnt constant when in gear its just on the initial gear change for a fraction of a second you get a quick groan, but when in gear and running the car is absolutely superb and pulls very strong indeed, when in gear and moving the car is quiet and very fast no noise whatsoever, just on the initial gear change when releasing clutch up past mid engage you get a groan for quite literally a millisecond lol.
could it be just somet needing adjusting or lubing maybe?

hmm, i would contact robiwill on this site via pm and ask him, hes very helpful and knows far more than i do. also handy that he breaks plenty of mk3`s, he would certainly know the answers for you :)

Does it sound like a growl/grindy whine noise?  Its one of those noises thats hard to explain...  but i think i know what you mean.
