I totally forgot about this problem with my car! Been doing more work on it than driving it!

But it's still happening, so...

@ rubjonny; metal shroud all good, but what carb heater!!?! (what am I looking for, I may be being stupid!), and its not earthed (I've got the connection to the rocker cover, but where would this connect to the carb?)

@ the flap people

i put the flap halfway open and put a screw to keep it there, no more carb icing last winter.

Eh? How does the flap open cos I can't move it in any way!

Cheers all

Dave

my 1.3 has just had this problem, broke down twice under braking and once stopped at the red light it seemed to be only when the engine was idling though if i kept a few revs on it was ok. i do need to replace the pipe that takes the hot exhaust air to the intake though so hopefully that'll sort it.

Fuel starvation can give the same symptoms!  replace inline filters before going for a carb rebuild...

the flap inside that round cover thing should open when the engine is on, if it don't move its siezed shut. You could just wedge it open with a self tappin screw through the side :)

As for the carb heater, its a small round thing with a wire coming out the back, it should have been fitted to the front of the carb.  If its not there then you need to fit one, and if the carb aint earthed then it wont work!  You run a wire between the rocker cover and the top of the carb somewhere, there should be a screw post somewhere you can attach it.

In this pic you can see the earth lead, the heater isn't visible here its below the thing with a spade terminal on it, check out me pierburg 2e2 FAQ post for an exploded diagram:

If you take the airbox off and look in the end of the pipe, you should see a silver hooky thing that goes up into the vacuum thingy.

you should be able to push that up by hand (the vacuum thing pulls the flap up). If it won't move, it'll have done the same thing as mine - the ends of the rod the flap pivots on will have gone rusty and siezed in the holes at the side of the tube.

I sorted mine by taking the flap housing off the end of the airbox (b*stard of a job, the plastic is really stiff) - it comes apart then, so you can clean up the ends of the rod, bung a bit of grease on and it should be OK!

('course, WD40 in the pivot might make it free up enough to work...)

Edit: ^^ dammit...

I had something like this on the A1(M), turned out the electrics were buggered, intermittently stopping the fuel pump pushing the juice in the engine thus the spluttering.  Cost me 250GBP to fix, beauty now!!!

I owned a 1981 Passat for ten years, like this one.

The last year or so I had it, the car would fail on A roads and motorways (basically, any road where lots of fast cold air entered the engine compartment. It would splutter to a halt and then be back to normal within 20 seconds. Off we go again for another 7 or 8 miles and then the same thing. Very dangerous on the motorway. We found out it was the carb icing up. In the Spring and the Summer the symptoms went away.

Ran the fuel tank low? This could of got a lot of dirt through so possibly just a dirty carb. To sort it for a bit, just start the car up let it tick over for a bit. Rev it to between 3-4k have a mate stick some cloth over the air intake and pull it out just as the car sounds like its going to stall. Perform this a couple of times to ensure that the Carb keeps clean :)
