Airbag light on

The airbag light (drivers) on my golf 1900D has been on since i bought the car, just wondering if its a common fault ? Is there anything i can do to reset it? or maybe somone can tell me why its likely to have came on? any checks i can make to see if itll go off or will i need one of those code check things?

get the fault code read first but it sounds like the airbag ring on the steering wheel is faulty??

how much will i be looking at the have it read? or am i best off going for a reader off ebay or somwhere?

Best bet is to find someone near you to quickly scan it for you. Failing that then a code reader or OBD cable to use a laptop is your best bet, VAG com is the better option. If you take off the ignition cowling (2 screws undrneath) you should see a flat cable underneath that slots into the clowling and goes from the wiring loom in the car to the slipring. If this is broken then you'll need to get yourself a new slipring fitted. I'd recommend a used one as they're about 80 quid from VW. If the cable is intact then it could well be the cable has fell off the back of the airbag. Take the two hex bolts out of the back of the steering wheel and remove the airbag and check the yellow plug is in. If both of them are fine then the airbag may of been removed at some point without resetting the fault codes. First thing i'd try is disconnecting the battery for 15 mins and see if it goes out after connecting it again

Did you check the wire going into the steering wheel was still intact?

aint had a chance yet mate, ive been cleaning  the inside of the car thorougly now for a few hours each day for the past week or so, just about stripped everything and cleaned it so its looking spot on, i will be starting the front tomorrow so when i get to the dash ill have a look

Ensure that your battery is not connected when you are messing around with the air bag , it may go off .
