VW Insurance
« on: 11 October 2007, 08:41 »
Picking up my ED30 on Monday and the dealer has been pushing me to take out some insurance policy that if the car was written off then they would cover the amount that my insurance company wouldn't i.e. if the insurance company offered me £16000 then this VW insurance would give me the £10000 to make it back up to the original price paid of £26000

Anyway my question is did any of you take this and is it worth the money  :undecided:

makavelli

it's worth having as gti, ed30 and r32 are all worth stealing for a joyrider/thief/specialist

vw are crooks though on their add-ons

i went for aa warranty who i found okay

you can pay monthly instead of in one go and it's cheaper than vw but there are cheaper out there but i don't know how good they are? you can cancel if you sell the car as well which means you'd save money over vw who expect one payment

cheers

OK cheers for the info lads - may shop around a bit and see if anyone can come up with a better deal.  Planning on keeping the ED 30 for a while though so making a one of payment is not a problem.

you'd still get it cheaper away from vw but if it was stolen and you wanted another vw then it may make it easier? i don't know.

someone mentioned as the ed30 is limited, you'd probably not be able to get that car new potentially anyway........

enjoy your driving, i think that is a nice car and a good alternative to the normal gti

A must IMO. My mate drove his 1.5year old 2.0 Scooby STI out of the garage he bought it from after a service and 200 yards down the road an old biddy pulled out on him and wrote it off. GAP had to pay up £13k  and he ended up with a new 2.5 STI. Still looks cheap inside though

I got offered it from my dealer for £300.  I found a site called www.click4gap.co.uk and got the same cover for £150.  when I told the dealer he sniffed at me and said it cant be as good cover.  so I got the oily tw4t to look at website on his PC and read the details and he said it actually looks ok and he cant compete on the price.

I've never made a claim so can't comment on the policy itself, but for 150 notes, it was good piece of mind after spending all that money.

I wouldnt buy a car without GAP insurance - normally get it as a stealer 'extra' when they won't give me anything else in the deal!

A few years ago my dads new Audi A8 was written off when a taxi driver pulled out into the side of him - without GAP we would have lost heavily on the car but as it made up the difference to invoice price all was well!

I remember the insurance company actually claiming the value was so low because it was a manual A8...pretty rare car then...because they don't produce them with a manual gearbox option!!

I was offered this last year when I bought my GTI. Dismissed it out of hand. Like all insurance, you pays your money and takes your chances

So far so good

May be some merit in having this cover if your car is written off but how many are following an accident/theft. AFAIK, if the car is new, it would be replaced anyway by the insurers on a standard insurance policy up to 12 months old.
