Brakes
« on: 21 September 2007, 12:37 »
it's a little way off yet but next time i change the pads i'm going to have to change the discs aswell, sucks but at the same time is handy cus then i know what's on there and i get to choose

been talking to some people about putting black diamond discs and pads on and have heard nothing but positives about them with how good they are and they look very cool aswell however someone said the other day that they had some and that when you were braking gently they squealed like anything and were very annoying

just wondering if anyone has had any experience with black diamond brake set-ups and if that was a one off case or a common thing

thanks for any help

Phil

Are these discs drilled or grooved?

Fitted drilled to my mk2 and were bloody sh#t the worst discs ever i think i have ever ever ever had, Did 2 laps of castle combe track then started to feel the worst ever vibrations through the pedal. between the holes they had cracked. sent them back they were not intrested at all , complete and utter wayne kerrs. would never ever buy any of there products again because how rude they were not cause of the discs

another problem with these discs is the black is just a coating and wears off.... then your discs look odd with silver and black!

From my understanding, on most after market discs the drilled ones are purely for cosmetic purposes?

I'd go for grooved discs!

But when do you know when your discs need changing and how often would they need changing compared to brake pads?

an avarage disc will see two sets of pads, but vibrations through pedal could mean warrped disc, lots of rot or groves on the disc or a big lip on the outer edge all means worn discs.

i usually get through 3/4 sets of pads before i need to replace the discs but then i don't do a lot of hard braking, always work out speed i need to go round corners before i get there.

way i tell if the disc needs changing is there is a lovely lip on the outer edge, plus my brakes now sound like they're scraping which is a sign i've found that the discs are on their way out

thinking i might just go with plain groved discs

anyone suggest any makes that are better or other ones to avoid?

Most performance type pads are a trade off between grip and life, also they have different heat ranges ie great from cold to whoooow no brakes at cold! the longer the pad can cope with heat (ie not fade as quickly) the more noise you tend to get at low temp and speeds, just the comprimise. Also need to fit anti squeal shims which don't seem to come with many of the after market pads!!

Could be a stupid question but what are anti-squeal shims?
