A mk5 R32 or Lotus Exige would do me nicely and maybe a Corrado VR6 Storm for Sundays

Definitley older cars, drive a modern car for a few days then jump back in a mk2 GTI and you start grinning like a fool. No contest :)

Probably got lost in the "Great Crash of 08

Money? I remember that. I'd probably stick with the old - get my Golf really sorted and maybe buy another Mini too. But only if Mrs Peel still had a dull but reliable Eurobox at her disposal.

Golf GTI: good enough as it is

one of my faves is the cossie rs 500, love series 1 escort rs turbos and escort mk 3 RS 1600i's they all look fookin ace, rare sight these days...

love my older Jap stuff, miles ahead of their time but have the older hot hatch look which i love, especially the interiors/dash board etc, i grew up with these so thats prob why, wont ever sell my swift GTI, the ammount spent on that could have bought me a almost new impreza turbo or similar, but the looks and compliments it gets are just mental, people cant believe its actually 17 years old...

new cars are good, have a mk 4 GTI which is a great drive etc and fits in with todays world perfect.

some people who dont really care about cars get our mk 4 gti and mk 3 gti which are both black mixed up and think are the same car, hahah

Iv just spent all weekend drivin round in my mates astra GTE 16v, totally standard on a H plate, that gets some looks too..again a rare sight in todays world

i think its pretty shallow for someone to judge somebody else by the age of the car they drive.....if its mint and looked after well it dont matter how old it is

Only thing that might tempt me away from a mk2 would be a Lotus Exige or maybe a new 911S Neither of which is going to happen!

Don't say that mate!
You get what you want out of life even if you have to work your arse off to get it!

I know what you mean mate, I'm not being pessimistic, it's just life is all about priorities and compromises.....you know....

  • one day il learn
as strange as it sounds id still have a vw in the garage and a ferrari outside if i won the lottery. I think as you put so much effort into owning an old car that it becomes part of you whereas a new car is just a purchase and disposabke renewable object with s purpose, there comes a time however when you start to get to trapped by the money pit, and start spending unknowlingly on an old ca rif it is your daily? am i right? maybenot if you are careful. i think the best way is to get an economical diesel for long commutes then use the golf or whatever at weekends in an ideal world
i must buy a new car!

I guess I may be in a fortunate position whereby if I really, really wanted to I could sell my cars (Rallye, camper & with the money from the sale of my mk1) and have a tidy sum to buy a new(ish) car, probably even a mk5 GTI if I got some finance on it, but I choose not to, mainly because a 16k car this week will be worth 10k in about 12 - 18 months, maybe less depending on what you buy, whereas I will lose absolutley nothing on the older cars I run. You could argue that it costs more in repairs etc, but I doubt the running and repair costs would cost me as much as the depreciation. I also find most modern cars boring and the same.

Plus, I enjoy older cars, they turn more heads than newer ones and they put a smile on my face everytime I get into them.
......now officially dubless.

I had a newer car and sold it recently.  It was much faster and very refined.

I could have bought a newish golf and choose to go for one with some character and i'm glad i did.  I'm much happier and now when i drive around, i've been getting people admiring the golf.  It's more reliable and doesn't have all of the service lights flashing like a christmas tree on heat, that the mk4's get.

Though if i had the money i would buy the new (soon to be released) golf gti (2008/09) as it just looks so good.
