getting rid of PAS, some q's
« on: 17 August 2007, 18:26 »
Due to a series of unfortunate events taht i did not cause, the hole in the block of my new engine where the PAS bracket bolts to at the back has broken off (im guessing a dropped engine at some point).

This has annoyed me as it means i cant attach my PAS pump bracket properly so im thinking the best way will be to ditch the PAS. What, apart from a non PAS rack of course will i need? Also, are gti and non gti racks the same?
I found this on ebay, will it fit mine: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=220141154509

seems a fair enough price, even if it is refurb. Would it fit a gti 16V or are the gti racks different in speed or weighting?

Thanks :)

Are you saying that you want to ditch the P/S because of a broken stud/bolt?
If thats the case just drill the broken stud, and use an EZout extractor, and refit the P/S... or am I missing something here....

nah, the actual engine has been dropped at some point and broken off the piece that the bolt goes into on the back of the block.

surely i would be more worthwhile getting somoen to weld another piece on? althought the block is iron so maybe not, not quite sure which piece you mean as there is a bolted bracket which attaches to the block
i must buy a new car!

Thats a fair price for a recon rack, I'd go for it, just need to strip out the reservoir and hoses from your car- If you're throwing the hoses out, I'll have 'em as samples so i can make new ones for a sensible price for forum members!

ok mate all you need to do is take off all the pipes and the pas rack place in bin!! then fit non power steering rack to subframe ( you dont need any pipes or bottle or pump) all you will need is the lower link on steering colum as pas is diffrent to non pas hope this is more helpful
