not relevant but this taxi i got in today had 291k on the clock, i said oh is the clock etc function broken as my mates one is, then he said the milage of it. I thought it sounded rattly and engine loud was a dti astra estate on 51 plate, sounded good for milage he said turbo has failed and few other stuff not fixed yet just shows stuff runs if well maintained

sorry about that wrote it quick and had little sleep due to noisey neighbours

I'd agree with later dubs being more troublesome, although it's not a strict rule.
First car, D reg Mk2 Golf GL, never had any problems in the year and half I had it, except a dead battery.
Second, mk3 16v, cat conv replaced, broke down, new distributer, faulty window, engine kept dying, spent almost a grand in 9months.
Third, mk2 16v, 155k, had it running great for a year, though it needed a new clutch and a wheel bearing when I sold it.
Fourth, mk2 Polo, £100 runabout, 120k, no problems in a year.
Fifth, mk4 Polo, no problems for year until the gearbox went. Aparently this is a common problem on Polos and Golfs of that era.
Current, Mk3 Golf CL, K reg, 85k, temp sensor problem couple of months ago, nothing else but normal wear and tear for a 14yr old car.

Also, so many posts on here are to ask how to sort something out, or I've just sorted this problem in this way. So of course it will seem like so many people have problems with their dubs.
It's the character, look and feel of dubs that we like, and the reason we stick with them even though they have problems.

I'd second that. There is just something about the marque which really appeals to me. I was grown up on a diet of BMWs in my family and we're talking 35 years ago to near enough present. I've had three BM's and loved them all, but the Mk2 Golf for shear pleasure driving is still the best.
