never say never as they say - good luck - maybe the mainland is different, I know in Northern Ireland when I went to insure a GTTDI (110bhp) at your age it was £3000! (hence why I drove a 1.6 Golf match for a year before my GTI)

It is normally cheaper yes and some companies now allow a named driver to generate a No Claims Bonus but I couldnt get this in NI so I had to jump in at the deep end when I was 17 and go out on my own - it was the right decision - just over 4 years on and I've got two cars covered on my policy for just over £800 (which isnt bad being 21)

Paul, you are spot on.

Mine is 2.0 non turbo version because inurance on the 1.8T was astronimcal. I got the 2.0l 8v version purley on the basis that I couldn't afford to insure the 1.8T. I live in London so insurance is pretty expenssive down here to. Saying that I am going to be getting a 1.8T or GT TDI 150 (I hope Ridge and Rhyso arent reading this) in April when I turn 21. The quotes I have been getting for myself being 21 and 3 years is resonable. Parker, just do what I did. Passed my test and bought a little 1.4 Clio to get from A to B for a year or 2 then look at getting something a little nicer till your 21. If you have the money to splash which looks like to do, then you can look at getting a MK4 1.8T or even a MK5 GTI at 19/20. You will still be paying lots for insurance, all depends what your willing to spend.

Roll on April

i no its sounds daft but could you get vw to take the turbo off and just add it on in few more years, or would insurance company still class it as a 2.0t as they dont make a 2.0 model?

aland - your in exactly the same position I was in - I had a lovely GTTDI nearly bought from a dealer when I was 19 - it was a minter with on 20k on the clock and I couldnt get it due to insurance

The following week the dealer phoned me and said he had taken a part ex in (the 2.0 GTI) which was a lower insurance group and spec'ed the same as the GT...my GTI was a nice car has to be said - one mature owner from new (still on its original tyres), special order sunroof and climate together and Turbo wheels...I miss it greatly!

Yeah, same thing mate.

Mine had everything I wanted apart from being 5 door (which is ironic as its come in handy and so glad its 5 now) and a didnt have the turbo wheels. It was in MINT condition and the engine looked realyl healthy with full VW history and at a sensible price. Was to go to pass on. The 2.0l 8v isnt the fastest thing in the world (lots of people slate it off which I think is a shame). But its my no means slow, rev it hard and drive it harshly (if you want to go quick, not all the time obviusly) and its not as bad as people make it out to be. Its a lovely "in between" car and will be missed when she goes.

lol I'm afraid its not as simple as that.
